Between my time in Yellowstone and my road trip after, I saw a lot of our national parks. All were big, grand, beautiful spaces of nature. But none of them had the allure and pure, righteous, powerful presence that Glacier National Park had. When I first climbed that park, taking the main road as it meandered into the clouds, morning light spilled across jagged snow-capped mountains into dramatic u-shaped valleys in full summer bloom. The Going-to-the-Sun road - crossing the continental divide at Logan Pass, at the apex of the world, where you could reach out and touch the edge of heaven. I was smitten with a sense of awe and wonder and respect and love that I’ve never felt before, even in Yellowstone. I had one of those gut feelings and knew in that moment that I wanted to spend a summer there. As such, the Many Glacier Hotel, a Swiss chalet-style hotel built in the 1910s next to an alpine lake in the heart of Glacier National Park, in the Swiss Alps of America, will be my home next summer as I have another adventure working in another national park.
On my first drive into the park a year ago, when I had no idea of the breadth of love I would feel for this place, I saw you kissed by orange, a part of the most beautiful mosaic of a rising sun I’ve ever experienced, and I marveled at your shape, your steepness, the shadows in your valley, how you towered over everything on the drive up to Logan Pass. You were one of the pieces of this place that imprinted into my soul.
Never in a million years did I think. Yet here I am.

I feel like I live under the watchful eye of this mountain.
It’s not the closest, and it’s not the biggest, but it is omnipresent in the valley. More than any other mountain here, it commands my attention when I walk outside each morning. It’s the profile. The angle. The position. The way Angel Wing sits in front of it. The way it sits like a monument in the center of the valley. I look at it and feel one with Earth.
This is Mount Gould, a chunk of the continental divide, resting ethereally between heaven and earth, cutting the clouds in half.
