The night in Kymal had been a bit more difficult than Vex had thought it would be. She had Trinket, and whatever his name was that had teleported them here. She hadn’t been paying all that much attention to who he was, she just wanted to get Kaylie to Scanlan. The stay overnight she was racked with so many questions. Did it work? Did Kaylie get through to him? Is Scanlan alive right now? By the morning she was exhausted, getting not a wink of sleep. But they were back in Whitestone now, and Vex couldn’t reach the castle fast enough.
They would have brought him back to the castle wouldn’t they? She asked where everyone was, and she was pointed in the direction she needed. She found everyone sitting among a room, Scanlan laying in the bed in the center of the room. For a moment she could feel tears welling in her eyes. It didn’t work. She stepped into the room and looked at Vax. They had both taken refuge under Scanlan for what felt like the longest time. When they were unsure, when they had no idea what they were doing. He was like the father they never got to have. They all looked out for each other.
Not getting a reaction from Vax, she turned her attention back to Scanlan. She walked closer to him, by his bedside. She could see Kaylie standing not too far from the bed, almost as if she was keeping watch over him. Finally, Vex gathered courage and swallowed the growing lump in her throat.
“Scanlan... can you hear me? I-It’s Vex.”
