Before the fall of 1981 Detroit Pickups were pretty much one-size-fits-all - large. That’s not to say that you couldn’t buy smaller pickups from Ford, Chevy, GMC, or Dodge (or even Plymouth, for a little while), it’s just that they were mostly Japanese designs rebadged for the Americas. GM’s small truck, the Chevy LUV, came from Isuzu and was in its second generation in 1981, but that new LUV wouldn’t last long - #GM introduced the #ChevyS10 and #GMCS15 that fall to replace it. - Officially offered from 1982 to 2004 (even longer in Brazil), the S-10/S-15/Sonoma - aka the #GMT325 platform - changed little under the skin in all that time - though it was given a total restyle in 1994. It was partly new and partly a parts-bin special - some of the running gear came from the A and H body cars (Malibu/Monza) and the engines were, at first, from Isuzu and GM’s car divisions. - They were the first home-grown compact pickups, with Ford’s Ranger arriving a year later. Though they were designed as a result of the fuel crisis and the popularity of the #compacttrucks, but like 1960’s Domestic “compacts” they were a little bigger than the imports they were aimed at or replacing. - The first year was a little limited - only a standard cab using the old LUV engine from Isuzu, with the 2.8 liter V6 from the Chevy Citation optional. An extended cab and more engine choices (sourced from the Cavalier) arrived for ’83. The truck wasn't the most sophisticated in the world, but it was enormously popular, durable, and easy to work on. Even the pre-94 S-series trucks are still a familiar site today. - The early S-10 had many specials and trim levels - most people associated the name #Durango with Dodge, but long before Dodge’s mid-size SUV (and after Ford’s experimental Fairmont Durango) Chevy used the name on mid-level trims for the S-10. Like the big trucks there were also special models in the form of the Cameo, Baja, Back Country and Top Gun. - This Durango sports a very rare color offered only in 1991-92 - #Seafoam Green. Bright colors like this made a comeback around that time, usually with accompanying graphics packages, but this one seems not to have been frequently ordered. https://www.instagram.com/p/BorY9EJFi7I/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=me2i63korq7g
