lollll, i’ve never read the books. how are they? i’ve heard they’re better at girl friendships/general lady positivity but from what i’ve seen the writing style is SO HILARIBAD.
omg kyrie i cannot stress enough how bad they are. esp the new ones where elena turns into some sort of floating angel thing lmao. hmmm tbh i don't rly remember that much of emphasis on female friendship? and just, it's hard to talk about it doing well by female representation when all the lady characters are hardly anything more than stereotypes. it's just SO BADLY WRITTEN and like, caroline is just the mean girl and then she gets pure evil and iirc there's some vague slut shaming going on. katherine is also way more complex on the show than in the books. (plus not one character of colour; i mean not that the show is doing that much better but in the books EVERYONE is white - edit no, not everyone, i am horrible and forgot about meredith). i read them a few years ago and it's all a blur tbh
