Boi, my parents literally had a fanfic rivals to lovers love story.

Both of my parents are over achievers in the best way possible. So mum, since grade one, had been getting full marks in every subject. She would collect all the book prizes and awards and did public speaking for fun.

Enter my dad in grade 8. He was new to the school and was running errands for the principal. He rocks up to mum's class to collect the roll call and mum doesn't think anything of him. Mum's friend takes a fancy, however.

Grade 10, dad has been taking top prize for maths and sciences since grade 8 and my mum is furious. Those are *her* prizes. She's taking top in every other subject, especially languages. Her friend, who still likes my dad, asks my mum to write love poems for her to give to him (because she's so good at english and mum's friend is a little tragic at it). Mum doesn't know the poems are for him, so she waxes lyrical and her friend gives them to my dad. My dad doesn't like mum's friend, but he *does* like my mum. He knows the poems are from her, he recognizes mum's calligraphy.

Grade 12, they're both head boy and head girl and friends now. Dad is a star at long jump and field sports and mum was a netball player and a cheerleader. They're still the top of their grade, you can't let your grades slip- especially in apartheid south africa where the only way out is education.

Grade 12 exams happen, mum and dad kill it- both gunning for Dux. At this point mum has realised she likes my dad. It gets to the awards ceremony, they don't know their results yet and tensions are high. The Dux award is between the both of them and mum *really* wants it. Dad doesn't really care too much, he just likes egging my mother on so he always tries to beat her academically.

They get called up on stage, the principal gives his speech and pulls out the award.

My dad gets Dux

Mum gets proxime accessit.

Mum faints on stage.

Apparently dad beat her by half a mark in the biology paper because he remembered the collective noun for the bones in the ear- the ossicles.

“Come on Kara, its an easy one.”
