The Rock Springs Schoolhouse near Gladewater, Texas, was built in 1849; and it was named after a nearby springs. It was the first school building in Gregg County. In use as a school until the 1930′s, the building also served as a church, as a lodge, and as a place for social functions and political meetings.  It’s been designated as a Texas Historical Landmark since 1966. Â
Originally, the building had a short steeple/bell tower above the front door. It was probably eliminated when the current roofing was added on top of the previous roofing.  At some point, the horizontal siding was added on top of the original vertical barn-style siding, some of which can be seen in the last photo where a little of the newer siding has fallen off.  Â

Eh.
Been feeling pretty bad here lately. Not because of anyone, just myself. I’m going back to bad habits. Ever since I moved back up here to my home town, bad habits are coming back. I hate it. I thought I killed them in South Texas. I gained back 20 pounds or maybe more after losing 40. I keep eating crap and I’m addicted to monsters and other energy drinks. High blood pressure runs in my family, and I’m pre-dispositioned, so high sodium foods and drinks are the worst thing to get addicted to again. Plus I hate myself for quitting the gym, I was doing so good. 🙄🙄

One of the best things about living in a small town is going to the annual Christmas Parade.  Most of the town turns out, and it’s fun to see old friends and meet new ones.  We had a little boy about 4 years old from two cars down come sit with us because he liked the view from our truck’s tailgate. We bundled him up in an extra blanket because it was cold, and we all sipped hot chocolate while we watched the parade.   This is a short video of the Gladewater Texas High School Band.  I love small town life!
Mrs. Lee’s Daffodil Garden in Gladewater, Texas, is a beautiful place to spend some time outdoors when the daffodils are in bloom.  The 800+ acre garden has a couple of ponds, portable restrooms, a replica pioneer log cabin that was built in 1954, and more daffodils than you could ever take photos of.  The dirt road through the gardens is about 4 miles long, with several places where you can park to get out and explore, take pictures, picnic, smell the flowers, etc.  Rainy weather will close the gardens down because the road gets really slick. Admission is by donations, so everyone should be able to afford to go. It opens up around February each year when the daffodils come into bloom, and stays open 7 days a week from 7am to 4 pm for as long as the flowers are blooming. Â
There are few things as much fun as attending a small town Christmas parade. Here in our hometown of Gladewater, Texas, most of the town turns out either as participants or spectators, and everyone has a great time. We love being able to park our truck along the route and just sit on the tailgate to watch the parade.Â
Merry Christmas, everyone!
