the command to “lie low at Lupin’s” is so touching to me i can’t even explain it. Dumbledore knows that Sirius’ presence in Lupin’s house will be accepted without hesitation; knows the years that stretch between those two and the jokes they would play together, crouched behind statues and swinging stairwells; hopes that Lupin and Sirius have not been too changed by war and death to change that. even more so, he does not ask Lupin, Lupin and his dingy apartment and his money running out, but he also does not ask Sirius, grime buried beneath his skin and form more used to dog than man. he does not ask because he knows they need each other too much, that it is to be a two-way healing process: dear Remus who has seen every loved one, it seems, betray him or die before his eyes, and Sirius, the framed backstabber of Peter’s tale with every happy memory sucked from him, leaving only flesh and bone. they will learn to trust humanity again, to clean their wounds and face the world. the two most destitute from that first war are to build each other up again and Dumbledore can only hope that this time, this time, they will see themselves as better on the other side of this, see their triumphs and their strengths, see themselves as young boys forced into a war, but he knows, more than anything, that nothing can be assured
