A final post for Random Contemporary Music series, here at Musica in Extenso! This was the basic series of our blog with 16 (!!!) episodes, with a lot of contemporary music, but not only. We posted here our actual favourites, our beloved music pieces and I think this was a possibility to express ourself through musical examples. It was so good to have this journey together as a team, but now it’s time to say goodbye and make a beautiful farewell.
For this last post I choose the famous Ola Gjeilo and a very amazing piece written by the Norwegian composer.

Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilos inspiration here comes from the solace he derives from New York at nighttime, and many of the tracks have emerged from improvisations…

While learning Gjeilo’s Northern Lights, someone’s phone went off.
Conductor: *pretending to answer a phone* Gjeilo?
*only two people laughed*
Conductor: I’m just gonna let that hang there.
It’s that time of the year! Christmas music!
Away In A Manger | arr. Gjeilo
Dear Followers,
It’s time to continue our special Random Contemporary Music series (4th Edition!), here at Musica in Extenso. Today we can experience a wonderful choral piece of a genious contemporary composer, Ola Gjeilo. I think I don’t have to talk about this piece, instead I suggest you to read the composer’s own words:
“Northern Lights is my most Norwegian production in years; composed in an attic outside of Oslo at Christmas time in 2007, it’s one of the few works I have written in Norway since I moved to New York in 2001. The U.S. is my home now, so I guess my work has been increasingly reflecting my love for American music, writing and scenery. Most of all, this piece and its text is about beauty. About a ‘terrible’, powerful beauty, although the music is quite serene on the surface:
Pulchra es amica mea, suavis et decora sicut Jerusalem, terribilis ut castrorum acies ordinata. Averte oculos tuos a me quia ipsi me avolare fecerunt.
Thou art beautiful, O my love, sweet and comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army set in array. Turn away thy eyes from me, for they have made me flee away.
Stay tuned! - Antal Zsuzsanna
