youâre all good! :)Marmageddon is the name that was collectively given to a period of New Zealandâs history that painted a dire picture of the state of New Zealandâs psyche. Following the most severe of Christchurchâs earthquakes in the years 2010-2011, it emerged that many, many buildings would have to be torn down and rebuilt due to irreparable damage. In March 2012 (I remember the year, and the early days of Marmageddon very well), it became apparent that one of these buildings that suffered major damage was the Sanitarium factory, the only factory in the country to produce the beloved yeast spread. As a result, the factory would have to close while they rebuilt it.When news of this broke, it turned ugly. Within 24 hours, Marmite was virtually nowhere to be seen in stores ANYWHERE. Upon the news that none would be produced for the forseeable future, people bought up in bulk under the panic of such an uncertainty. The day before this was announced, I had been at the supermarket with my flatmate and we had decided not to buy any more even though we were running low. This was a mistake that I still regret. Initially, it was announced that the factory would be up and running within a few months. No such luck. âAugust!â they cried. August came and went.âSeptember!â Nope, they were still working on it.âYouâll get Marmite in time for a Christmas miracle!â they shouted. No, no, no. People profited off this dark time. People were auctioning their 10 year old jars online for ridiculously inflated prices; some of this money went to charity, some didnât. It then emerged that there would be a date announced for when Marmite would be back on the shelves - but this was a state secret held only by the Prime Minister and the General Manager of Sanitarium.Finally, in March 2013, Marmite was back. The apocalypse had ended. Marmageddon was finally over! People were rejoicing. In the jubilance over the yeast spread, people were so eager to get their fix that supermarkets had to implement a temporary limit on how many jars people bought so as not to recreate the panic buying the year before. But that was a dark time. One we hope never to experience again.Â
