Magentaâs Caress 2 - Deleted Scene
Well, I lied. Not moving on to MC3 just yet. This scene didnât make the final cut (the focus group didnât respond well)- but I still like it. I shot this one inside the Go Bar in Athens, which was a stand-in for the Magentaâs Caress cabaret. I love love love the tinsel. Also the lighted DJ booth.
The props take center stage in this scene. In fact, they tend to hijack the plot and scream for attention. If any scene deserves âpausingâ on a frame, itâs this one. Wes Anderson greatly influenced me in this regard. Take Bottle Rocket, for example; at the beginning of the movie, Dignan (Owen Wilsonâs character) is reading an excerpt from his notebook. If you pause the DVD and read what he doesnât read, itâs hilarious. It turns the cinema into a literary experience. Props to watch for: Carlosâ earring, the talon-like magnifying glass, the book titled Managing the Social and Emotional Needs of the Gifted, and the dossiers of potential cabaret dancers.
Final note: my good buddy Mixon Robinson is playing the inept butler.
