#GilesCorey, born 1611- an English born farmer Giles was accussed of witchcraft in 1692. Corey refused to enter a plea and thus could not be tried by the laws of that time. The common law remedy for this was "Peine forte et dure" in which the accessed was forced down and heavier and heavier stones were placed on their chest in order to force an admission of guilt (or innocence) allowing a trial to proceed. . . For two days beginning on September 17 Giles Corey was subjected to the torture.
