Gilbert Blythe, your best friend and crush, stood in front of you. He had dark bags under his eyes and tears held back. Of course, you could only assume it was because of the loss of his dad, but you soon found out the real reason.
“We won’t see each other for awhile, Y/N.” He said, rubbing your arms with his warm hands.
“Are you not attending school tomorrow, Gil?”You asked, tilting her head.
“No, I am not.” He looked away, his moving hands stilling at your own.
“Why does it sound like you’re saying goodbye?” You slightly laughed. He didn’t. You stopped your laughter and looked the uncomfortable boy straight in the eyes. “Gilbert Blythe, how long will you be gone for?”
“I’m not even sure if I’ll be back.” He finally said after leaving you without an answer for a good few minutes.
Tears welled up in your eyes.
“Gilbert- no… I- why?” You managed to stutter out through your upcoming sobs. You pulled the boy into a hug.
“I can’t deal with the loss of my father.” He sobbed. You felt the top of your hair get wet.
“Oh, Gilbert.” You sighed, rubbing his back. “Just- please sent me letters - anything really.”
“I will, I promise.” He said. “But I won’t leave.”
“What do you mean?” You were baffled as he pushed away from the hug.
“Not without doing this.”
Gilbert cupped your cheeks in his hands, wiping away your tears. He leaned in, as did you. You reached each other and it felt just right.
“I’ll wait for you, my Gilbert.”
“I won’t make you wait long, my Y/N.”
