The Royal Tenenbaums (2001, Wes Anderson)
I Never Sang for My Father (1970, Gilbert Cates)
Happy Father’s Day! Today, I present two Gene Hackman starring films about complicated, dysfunctional father/children relationships. He plays the tortured son in I Never Sang for My Father and in the The Royal Tenenbaums, the selfish and inconsiderate father. The former a melancholy drama with no easy answers. A combination of dark comedy and uncomfortable drama, tied together with Wes Anderson’s quirky, meticulous style, forms the latter. They both show very difficult relationships that are emotionally trying.
