The gievrie - sacred drum - from which this drawing is taken is coming home to Saepmie in June, and will be showcased here in Liksjoe, in our Saami exhibition, which is located on the exact same spot where the drum was collected by force from its rightful owner some 250 years ago.
I'm in charge of translating the exhibition into English and German, and I'm really excited about the return of one of the few remaining drums from our persecuted, traditional religion.
Our sacred drums were stolen from us at the end of the 17th century and throughout the 18th century, most of them were destroyed and very few of the kidnapped drums have made it home again. Their owners were put in prison, and in extreme cases burnt at the stake or executed in other ways.
