Update on the injured Giant Ryan
The six-year-old colt remains at New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania, but has yet to receive surgery on his leg
Dr Dean Richardson issued this statement:
"Giant Ryan fractured both sesamoid bones in his left front fetlock. He was supposed to have a surgical fusion of the fetlock joint, a procedure that would allow him to retire to become a breeding stallion.
The surgical procedure has been delayed because of concerns about the blood supply to the damaged part of the limb. Treatment is being given in an effort to restore the blood supply so that the fusion surgery can be safely performed at a later date.
He is comfortable and stable but we will need to do further tests assessing his injured limb before we proceed with any surgery. The owners are anxious to do whatever is necessary to help him."
A sobering note: Last year's Vosburgh Invitational winner Giant Ryan broke down during the True North Stakes at Belmont directly after the Belmont Stakes
