“isn’t she cute? shuri grins from ear to ear, leaning against the wall. she’d introduced a new person to haunt, a young engineer and technician named riri williams. shuri had plans of riri being your first haunting.
“she is. but what do you want me to do? you’re better at this than i am.” you step closer to riri, and she looks up, looking right at you unknowingly. she could feel you and shuri’s presence, and it was unsettling.
“i must be trippin’” riri mumbles, shaking her head. she reaches for her book once again, but shuri beats riri to it, tossing the book on the floor. “HELL NO.” riri shouts, jumping out of her chair.
you choke back a laugh, while shuri lets it all out. “i want you to do that. do to her as i did to you when you were just a mortal. perhaps then she’ll be more compliant than you were.” shuri takes a verbal jab at you, and you were having none of that.
“now just a second! you were so persistent on me being the thousandth soul, you haunted me my entire life.”
“and you fell in love with me, now here we are,” shuri places a kiss on your head with a smug grin. “you’re capable.”
“but you fell harder.” shuri’s hand makes its way to the small of your back, her thumb rubbing in circular motions. “she’s already aware she’s being haunted. but she doesn’t know there are two. make yourself known, sithandwa sam.”
all the while of your conversation, riri was freaking out. she grabbed her speaker and held it tight, her eyes sharp as they search the room. “whoever… whatever you are… i don’t fuck with that!”
you found a way to outsmart riri, taking a page out of shuri’s book. you were well aware of the book riri was reading, and you also knew that your name was in it. flipping to one of the pages, riri watched them move by themselves in pure terror.
you then took a highlighter, highlighting your name for riri to see and read.
“…y/n…” riri mumbles, and suddenly, there you were in your ghostly form, standing right in front of her with a cocky grin.
“what do you plan on doing with that?” you gesture at the speaker riri held.
“SHIT!” riri screamed, throwing the speaker right at you. of course, it only went through you, which freaked riri out even more.
“this feels familiar, doesn’t it?” shuri sits down on riri’s couch, enjoying the sight in front of her.
“get out… get out of my dorm!”
“i think we both know you don’t want that,” you shake your head, taking a seat next to shuri. riri can see that someone is sitting next to you, but she can’t see who that person is. “rianna. such a pretty name.”
“who-“ riri points next to you. “who the hell-“
“that's my wife. would you like to see her? she’s been dying to have a conversation with you. all you have to do is say her name, my love.”
“what’s… what’s her name?”
“shuri?” riri’s eyebrows jump up nearly off of her face. “shuri… like the-“
“yes,” shuri nods as she is finally revealed to riri. “we have a smart girl on our hands, y/n. she knows who i am. how come you didn’t know who i was?”
“because i didn’t give a fuck,” you roll your eyes playfully, offering a smile to riri, who was just confused all over. “now that you can see us, i think we should have a little talk.”
“about…?” riri placed the speaker down, hiding her slight grin from your attitude. this didn’t go unnoticed by shuri.
“how are you a ghost hunter, but terrified when one appears?” you look into riri’s eyes, your eyes dangerously low.
“i wasn’t terrified, i just-“ riri cleared her throat. “you caught me off guard. and i’m not a ghost hunter… i just… i dabble. I guess.”
“i dabbled in many things. you are aware of my inventions, are you not, rianna?”
“riri,” riri corrects shuri, pacing around the room. “and, i mean, yeah. that’s the reason why i’m into all this. because of you. i never would've gotten into tech if it weren’t for you.”
for a moment, you think you see shuri smile. you don't believe it until you do a double take. rou see admiration in both riri and shuri, and you find it adorable.
shuri just had that effect on everyone, you suppose. but you also knew this was the calm before the storm.
“i am flattered, riri.” shuri places a hand on riri’s shoulder to stop her pacing. the younger girl looks up at shuri and offers a gentle smile. oh, only if she knew what was next to come. a shame.
“it seems like you’d like to know more about us and how we live.” you speak up, your voice calm and collected. “we would love for you to join us, riri.”
“join you? like… become a ghost” riri chuckles awkwardly, shaking her head. “look, it was nice meeting you and all, you know? You proved some of my theories, but, i gotta stay here. i got too much to live for. l-look, you’ve seen my studies. you know just how close i am!”
“so much to live for…” shuri glances over at you.
“and yet, so much to die for.” you smirk at shuri, taking her hand.
“i was once in your shoes, riri. i didn’t want to become a ghost. like you, i just had too much to live for,” you pick up riri’s notebook, flipping through the ages filled with theories and observations. failed experiments. “life is delightfully unlivable in our haunted mansion. So much to do, so much to see. so many things you can do that you cannot as a mortal. what do you have to prove, my love? everybody knows you’re a genius. come take a break.”
“come be with us.” shuri finishes for you, her voice much more stern.
riri’s eyes widen, shaking her head. “how-how about a deal?”
“a deal?” shuri doesn’t sound amused. she ‘s usually very adamant on what she wants, and when she wants it. “i don’t make deals.”
“hear me out! you two help me prove my studies… and-and i’ll join you in your mansion. i swear. just… be by my side until… uh-”
“you die?” you tilt your head with a smile.
“yes! but no haunting… please.”
“i’m not seeing the fairness in this.” shuri shakes her head.
“i am,” you nod your head, stepping closer to riri. “we will help you with your studies, dear. we will be by your side,” you cup riri’s cheek. “and when it is your time, you will join us in our manor.”
“break the deal,” shuri takes hold of riri’s other cheek. “and i’ll haunt you with no end. when i’ve had enough fun, i’ll kill you and trap you inside of the mansion. you’ll never see the outside world again.”
you sigh softly at shuri’s words. your eyes, however, don’t leave riri’s. you see the terror in the poor girls eyes, and you give her a gentle smile and nod.
“i’ll be back with a contract.” shuri states before vanishing. with the two of you left alone, the air is still. less tense.
“i guess what they say about meeting your idols is true.”
“she’s not usually like this. i’m not sure what’s got her so upset.” you take a seat, bringing riri with you. “things will be alright. she will lighten up.”
“perhaps i will, perhaps i won't. but, you're likable, rianna.” shuri reappears with the contract in one hand, and pen in the other.
“riri.” riri corrects. another mistake on her part.
“another thing,” shuri quickly puts down the contract, gripping riri’s neck tightly. “when you sign this, you will belong to me. you’ll be wise to watch your tone around me. i can and will call you whatever i please. whether that be rianna, or the naughtiest, most degrading name i can think of. you. are. mine.”
shocked beyond reason, riri stares up at shuri and wonders what she just got herself into. there’s no turning back now.
“let her go, udaku.” you growl, pulling shuri away from the young girl. your words, but mostly your tone, was a slap in the face to shuri, and she knew you were serious. She takes her step back in silence, and lets you take over.
“sign here, my love,” you whisper to riri, who is trembling as she signs. “don’t be afraid. i wont be as rough as her, i promise.” you offer another smile. “just behave. can you do that for me?”
riri nods as she signs the contract.
“good girl.” you and shuri say in unison.
and of course, riri fell in love with you. it took quite some time for shuri to realize that the two of you would be with the girl for life. She saw her as nothing but someone below her. a student, almost. they only bonded when it came to technology, spending most of their time together in a lab or garage.
but when it came to you and riri, things were much more gentle. you would introduce her to literature, help her write papers. The contrast between you and shuri was the perfect balance. perfect enough for three of you to, eventually, not right away, fall in love.
when it was riri’s time, you and shuri wouldn’t admit how excited you were to her face.
“you are remembered by many people, are you satisfied?” you glanced over at riri, who was getting used to her new ghostly form.
“not yet,” riri shaks her head, sighing. “when i was mortal… i didn’t know if it was wrong… but i was so in love with the two you. i don't want things to be weird now that i’m a ghost, and i don’t want shuri feeling-”
“we already knew that, sthandwa sam.” shuri chuckles, eyeing ririi.
“we are in love with you too, riri,” you place a kiss on her head. “and it’s not wrong. shuri was trying to fuck me for years before i realized that nobody cared i had sex with a ghost.” you admit with a simple shrug, leaving both shuri and riri’s jaws on the floor.
“i thought we vowed to never speak of that moment.” shuri coughed, hiding her face in her hands.
“you did it with y/n?! while she was mortal!? is that allowed?”
“I- listen, y/n was very… it was only once!”
“twice. shuri never left my side. kind of like what the three of us had, except there was no contract. shuri followed me like a lost puppy until the day i died.”
“it’s about time someone knew! it’s not like riri is going to tell the world.”
“how did you know that i was in love?” riri asks in between a laugh.
“because you looked like y/n.”
“because you looked like shuri.” you and shuri reply at the same time, then give each other a glare.
there were now 1,001 happy haunts in the mansion. three were the most joyful.
