We have had some incredible results,  from the finds collected over the course of the four days, including;

174 Sherds of Pottery 73 Sherds of Ceramics 3 Pieces of Clay Pipe 38 Shards of Glass 19 Fragments of Animal Bone and Shell, 30 Fragments of Brick and Tile 27 Pieces of Iron and Metal And finally……71 Flints!

Fantastic work everyone,  thank you for your help over the four days.

The finds have now be sent off for analysis to the relevant experts,  we will hear back soon and find out exactly what we have got!

The purpose of this project is to enable the community to research and identify the ancient routes of Gower, such as field boundaries, pathways and tracks through map regression, aerial photography, and field work, complemented by using plant species as a method (Hooper’s Law) of dating old hedgerows.

The ancient ways will be shown on paper and GIS mapping, their past use and current condition recorded, and their purpose and accompanying stories collected. It is hoped that it will be the first step in the re-establishment of a number of these routes, eventually with interpretation regarding their former use, and providing a safer alternative to walking on the busy Gower roads.

We will be starting the first session on Wednesday 25th May, 6 till 8pm at the Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust,  whereby we will be holding a research session into the trackways across Gower. We will be looking at Tithe Maps, Archwilio and Historic Mapping to research the location and span of these ancient routes, along with their current condition.

We had a brief hiatus in the project, whilst the finds recovered from the field walking event were being washed and processed.

Our project archaeologist Sarahjayne Clements took some of the finds to Knelston Primary School (Years 4 & 5), and some of the finds to the Young Archaeologists Club (YAC) in Swansea to wash and analyse.

Last week, we had our wonderful Heritage Champions come to the office to help sort through, categorise and weigh the finds.

Good results obtained again, with further finds recovered, ranging from flints to possible medieval pottery!

These finds will now be sent to the relevant finds specialists, who can interpret the finds and produce a detailed report for us to use.

We will be holding a’ Flint Presentation’ at the National Museum Wales, Cardiff, sometime in June given by Elizabeth Walker, the Principal Curator: Collections & Access / Palaeolithic & Mesolithic Archaeology, for our flint artefacts.

A final date will be given sometime later this month, so keep watching this blog for updates!

We had a World War One scope measuring tool,  a gramophone piece,  a possible stone tool and flint.

All finds were recorded,  photographed and returned apart from the possible stone tool and flint which were kindly donated for further analysis.

Our next finds roadshow is going to be held at the Murton May Day,  where we will be holding another stall so come on down and bring your finds!
