Any whypipo shocked by modern day racism need to read. Read Black history, read Native American history, read about lgbtq history, read something that you weren't taught in American schools about other cultures, their stories, their ways of life, their fight for equality, etc. That way, you don't look like an asshole talking about "I thought we were past this."
