I do this job to help people, to heal people. I can just about guarantee by epidemiological data that I either am or will be an asymptomatic carrier. But by nature of being a doctor, I am already caring for the sickest and most vulnerable people in our community. The thought that I could be responsible for killing them in the course of caring for them with inadequate PPE is truly horrifying.

These are the kinds of daily texts and messages that I get from family and some of my best friends working on the frontlines in our hospitals. I worry like crazy about them EVERY DAY of this pandemic. Imagine if it was your mother, father, sister, brother, spouse, or best friend texting you like this. What would you do? How would you feel? You’d want to help of course and do anything you can to help protect them so they can protect others. Last week I posted about my own mother’s scary situation as a nurse at a hospital in NJ which right now has the 2nd highest number of Corona Virus cases in the US. The shortage of protective personal equipment (PPE) is still a major problem so for the past week I’ve been working with @theserenagoh to find a smarter way to help! That’s how @themaskfund was born. We’ve just launched our fundraiser today to raise money so that we can bring Personal Protective Equipment (“PPE”) from the factories to the frontlines. 100% of donations will be spent on purchasing and distributing masks to the medical professionals in the United States. Anyway looking forward to begging for my new n95 allotment, if they even budgeted for pharmacists to get one. It’s cool, I’ll just show up to the intubations wearing a snorkel with some gauze in the breathing tube. I mean, I assume I still gotta go since I assume they still want those sweet sweet drugs during and after the intubation process. Maybe they’re intubating people without drugs nowadays?

After a local nurse working with Covid 19 patients in a hospital requested scrub caps for herself and her colleagues I turned a diagram for a pattern I found online into a printable PDF pattern and got to work. When they can keep their hair covered they don’t have to wash their hair after every shift. I can’t even begin to imagine how exhausted they must be at that point! Our medical personnel, first responders, and essential personnel shouldn’t have to work without proper PPE 😞 The pattern and a tutorial video are on my Facebook page (link in bio) Ohhh, and I haven’t forgotten about the pattern digitizing donation promotion!
