Scott’s fingers trembled as they hovered over the blinding screen. The contact name ‘mom’ seemingly making the air around him become obsolete. His body was numb, frigid, and as he choked down whatever had jammed itself into his throat, the dial tone began to ring.

It took three rings before her voice came on. The sound causing Scott’s heart to come to a thunderous stop, and all the blood rush from his body to his toes. She was gone. She was gone, and it was his fault. Her voice, the one that comforted him through everything, his dad, his heartbreak, his struggles, offered him no comfort now. Just the sickening remembrance of how he couldn’t save the only person he needed to.

"This is Melissa McCall, leave your name and I’ll call you back later!" Click. The recording ended, and Scott could hear his own unsteady, rapid heart pounding in his ears as he tried to find the courage to speak.

"M-mom?" Scott’s voice came out in a hoarse, cracked tone. The sound of a broken boy. The pressure behind his eyes started to burn, indicating the imminent foreshadowing of tears. Which, after his mom’s death, was no rarity. And even though the house was empty, it was Scott who felt it.

"I miss you. You really need to come home. Y-you told me, ‘be your own anchor’, but Im not anything without you. Mom. How am I supposed to handle this alone?" He took a shaky breath, the tears that plastered his face, cascading down as he wished he could.

"I left the door unlocked, and all the keys in their regular hiding spaces, and I just… I really need you." He sounded desperate, and if it were for anyone other than the one woman he cared most about, he would have probably accepted the death, but she couldn’t die. She was Melissa McCall, and death was a joke to someone as strong as her.

"It’s not fair! It’s not fair that you…" But his words trailed off, he hadn’t used the ‘D’ word in a sentence since the funeral, and whenever anyone tried to comfort him, he resorted into himself, built walls so high the Chinese would even marvel at them. And yet the solitude he felt was still drowning him. Captivating his every movement, and reminding him that his mom would never be coming home.
