Part of the sky glowed purple! It was the now famous night of May 10, 2024, when people over much of the world reported beautiful aurora-filled skies. The featured image was captured this night during early morning hours from Arlington, Wisconsin, USA. The panorama is a composite of several 6-second exposures of the visible sky, with north in the center, and processed to heighten the colors and remove electrical wires. The photographer (in the foreground) reported that the aurora appeared to flow from a point overhead but illuminated the sky only toward the north. The aurora's energetic particles originated from CMEs ejected from our Sun over sunspot AR 6443 a few days before.

This has an actual Geostorm countdown that shows an hour and thirty minutes until the Geostorm, but only starts with forty minutes left to go in the movie. So you kinda know everything will turn out alright. Unless the heroes fail and leave the the whole world to die after the credits roll? Which is it? You’ll have to watch the movie to find out. 

Anyway, maybe it’s because the last movie I watched was a CGI-heavy blockbuster that sucked, I thought this one was alright by the standards of this kind of movie. Most of the special effects look good, some of the disaster scenes are fun in concept and assured in execution, and the actors seem to be giving a shit. Obviously Gerry B is fun to watch, even if he spends a lot of time looking at screens. Zazie Beetz is fun as the Steve Buscemi character in a Bruckheimer movie. I liked when Abbie Cornish pulled out a gun. Less so when Ed Harris took a punch to the face. Alexandra Maria Lara, she of three first names, plays a character with the last name of Fassbinder, so I am one step closer to completing his filmography. And Andy Garcia plays a Democratic president modeled after Andrew Cuomo? Which leads me to the politics of this thing…
