One would think the mess of highways known as the Swamps of Jersey, where several interstates and branches come in and out of New York City, would inspire derision. And it usually does.
I’ve always hated driving this area.
But then I went to Ireland.
I loved Ireland but I realized touring the country that everything is at a certain scale. For instance, the River Liffey in Dublin. It’s a nice river but you can walk over the bridge in 5 minutes and go from north to south or vice versa.
That is not the case with many bridges near where I live in New England, including the bridges over Connecticut River near my home.
So, as I was driving to Baltimore from Connecticut three weeks after being in Ireland, I ended up traveling over the George Washington Bridge. This is never the right choice when crossing the Hudson but, anyway, there I was.
That dumped me into the Swamps of Jersey or, more accurately, the massive roadway system built over the swamps. For the first time, I began to see the immense scale of the thing, the incredible work that must have gone into its’ creation. It suddenly turned from an eyesore into a thing of incredible achievement. Look at what was created in this hostile environment.
I don’t know if it’s a good or a bad thing. But it is an awe-inspiring thing.
