#OnThisDay > 43 years ago on November 27, 1978, a very tragic day unfolded in #SanFrancisco. It was on this day that both Mayor #GeorgeMoscone and Supervisor #HarveyMilk were #assassinated by former supervisor, ex-cop and firefighter Dan White at #CityHall. Moscone died three days after his 49th birthday. Harvey Milk was 48 years old. Senator #DianneFeinstein, who was the President of the Board of Supervisors at the time, announced to the public the shocking news on live TV and radio, "As President of the Board of Supervisors, it is my duty to make this announcement. Both Mayor [George] Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk have been shot and killed. The suspect is Supervisor Dan White." Later that night, a candlelight vigil and march took place that started from Milk's camera shop (now Human Rights Campaign Store) in the city's Castro neighborhood leading up to the front steps of City Hall. After the shootings happened, Dianne Feinstein became acting mayor of San Francisco and appointed Harry Britt to fill in Milk's supervisorial spot. Britt passed away on June 24, 2020. #sanfranciscocityhall #sanfranciscohistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CWycK2DrD3f/?utm_medium=tumblr
