Some people think the fruit we call orange was named for the color, but in truth, it’s the opposite! The color was originally called geoluhread, which is basically the word you say when you stick out your tongue and hold it with your finger and thumb while saying, “gold-yellow-red.”

Folks tolerated this rollicking nonsense word until somebody showed up with a sweet, round, snazzy colored fruit from the Far East called a naranga. Everybody agreed that “naranga” was a lot easier to say and nicer than having to taste your fingers every time you wanted to refer to the color between yellow and red, and they all decided to rename the color after the tasty fruit.

I never really liked orange all that much until I met Hatshepsut, Fiasco's mother, and now it's one of my very favorite colors.
