County Durham, 1975. Five years after the death of esteemed Chief Inspector George Gently, a new case reopens old wounds for the colleagues he left behind. When Detective Inspector John Bacchus and the newly-promoted Rachel Coles notice striking similarities between their crime scene and Gently’s unsolved murder, the pair are soon drawn into the murky political world of his ill-fated final investigation. Despite all evidence pointing to the last-known person to see Gently alive, Bacchus and Coles start to suspect that all is not as it seems. Working against forces far greater than themselves, and forced to question the lengths they will go to in search of answers, can the detectives catch the true culprit before it costs them their career or their lives? And as the secrets surrounding Gently’s final hours are unearthed, they are faced with the toughest question of all. Will bringing his killer to justice ever be enough?
