Rwanda - known as the country of thousand hills. It's difficult to explain the essence of Rwanda. In April 1994, as the world’s media was focusing its attention on the election of Nelson Mandela, and the end of South Africa’s apartheid, something terrible was happening in Rwanda. After years of mass manipulation and preparation the genocide reached its climax - the Hutu tribe started mass killing people from the Tutsi tribe. Friends were killing friends, and their own family members. This tiny East African country, was the centre of one of the world’s most barbaric, bloodiest and cruelest massacre that left over 1 million minority Tutsi and moderate Hutus dead. In Kigali I visited the genocide memorial and got deep insides about Rwanda's sad history. It was difficult to envision the reality that took place just 24 years ago...it left me deeply touched... Considering its history, it is outstanding and incredible to see and experience Rwanda today...Rwanda is clean, organized and forward thinking. Of course it does not have the same development level across the whole country...Kigali is outstanding for at least all East Africa...I would say that it has european standards. There are trash bins everywhere, plastic bags are forbidden in the whole country, people are respecting traffic regulations and there seems to be a lot of business going on. Kigali is definitely one of these places I could imagine living for some time. Unfortunately I spend only eight days in Rwanda...most of the time in Kigali recovering from a second (weak) malaria. As I'm going to meet a friend from Germany for diving on Zanzibar at beginning of December, I felt that I should hurry up a bit 😉. I'll come back one day and take more time to explore Rwanda properly...it's a beautiful and interesting country. Make sure you're fit when you come for cycling here...these thousand hills are challenging 😁. #rwanda #cyclingrwanda #genocide #genocidememorial #kigali #cyclingafrica #bikepacking #neverstopexploring #adventurelife #thousandhills #sadhistory #hutu #tutsi #adventure #nevernotriding (hier: Rwanda) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqeoyVEl2tt/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=11s4ao5qkwz6x
