thoughts on emre/genji pairing? i personally would KILL to have them interact
Emre was the member of the Overwatch strike team who gave Mercy the initial permission to cybernize Genji.
One nonconsensual cybernization of his own later, I think this fact haunts Emre every damn day. He will never let himself forget it. It's towards the top of the list of the many obligations he's placed on himself for if he manages to make it out of this (*gestures vaguely at the Conspiracy*) alive.
Now, Emre's projecting, a lot. Genji's cybernetics were hand-crafted by Mercy, a doctor famed for her compassion. And while there were significant hiccups in that development process, plus the meddling of Blackwatch, well. . . Emre's cybernetics do not have a similar luxury or regard for his quality-of-life. Every time Chernobog forces another upgrade, Emre assumes that Genji must have felt/dealt with similar, when this wouldn't be the case.
Which means that during an eventual Jailbreak situation where Emre finally does get to meet Genji face to face, Emre is going to apologize profusely for being the one to sentence him to cybernization hell. . . and then Genji interrupts him to thank him for recommending him for Mercy's treatment.
Emre actually starts fighting Genji about this. "I did this to you. Why aren't you angry? You should be angry, you need to be angry, you can't let me get away with this." Genji only responds with measured gratitude and it really upsets Emre in a way he can't explain.
Emre, local guy who usually is able to pride himself on his emotional intelligence, snaps. Storms off. Genji finds him on the roof later, and with a deftness that can only be gained by lived experience, talks Emre out of his anger and into a better state of mind.
---
I think SO damn much about Genji, having overcome his own trials and tribulations with his cybernetics (and how he was forced to use said cybernetics for unsavory purposes in Blackwatch) now being able to pass on that wisdom and potential path to peace to Emre. . .
Zenyatta is younger than Genji, yet Genji became his student. I can see the same sort of thing happening with Emre choosing to become Genji's student despite the fact that he's technically the more senior party. And maybe "student" is a harsh word for the kind of bond they would have; Genji places a lot of reverential respect for Zenyatta out of both cultural and personal preference, and Emre wouldn't imitate that energy. . . but I think there'd still be significant respect there.
(Post fall-of-Overwatch) Genji has a video blog but he uses it mostly to track and rank the best liquid meal replacements. He posts it publicly because he had to sort through hundreds of brands and flavors to find the best ones and he's not about to squander that research. Oh, and he'll occasionally do shitposts where he blends foods that probably should not be blended together- he blended dino nuggets and mountain dew together just to feel something on the anniversary of his "death" one year and it's his most-viewed video.
don't care + having fun + playing
