When you find a person who shines a light on everything you like about yourself, who inspires you to be the best version of yourself, big decisions seem easy.

I asked Maya to marry me.

Today I am going to ask her.

Dear Diary,

I’ve spent the last few days talking with Maya about her life in Shang Simla. The more we talked, the more I felt that she was reluctant to return. She is not close with her family, not like mum and I, and her ex husband never let her work or make friends. She has no anchor there.

Today I worked up the courage to ask if she would move here. If she would consider living with mum and I.

She said she would.

So that’s one question down. One to go.

Dear Diary,

Having Maya here is so wonderful. I wish every day could be exactly like this one.

Maya loves it here. She loves the ocean, she loves the flowers, and she loves me. She says so often. She knows I like hearing it.

I’m working up the courage to do something. A couple of things, actually.

Dear Diary,

Finally the two most important people in my life have met.

Mum was wonderfully warm and welcoming to Maya. Maya was nervous and quiet, but mum spoke enough for both of them. She seems more like her old self: cheerful and chatty.

I asked Maya about the encounter afterwards. She said, “your mother is the kind of person I always wanted to be”.

Dear Diary,

The time has come to return home to Isla Paradiso. This time I was able to convince Maya to come with me. She was anxious to get away from Shang Simla. Too many memories of her marriage, she says.

Maya has become my family. She has become my home.
