Learning Ruby and PHP
I've recently fallen in love with code. Now I don't have to wait around for anyone to make me a website or wonder what exactly goes on under the hood with the digital properties I manage at work.
I've found two amazing resources to make learning how to code doable and also fun.
Mattan Griffel's One Month Rails on Skillshare was an amazing one month crash course in Ruby on Rails. Teaching is a talent and Mattan definitely has the chops. It's amazing how inspired I am and how much I've accomplished (I've already built a Pinterest-like website!). Mattan, I hope you're following up with some more courses!
I also took a workshop on PHP a couple days ago at General Assemb.ly Los Angeles. It's great to learn things online but sometimes being in an actual classroom can really help, especially when you're learning challenging new skills. It was great to learn code along with 20 other enthusiastic n00bs. Melissa, our teacher, works for Huge. Between her and Jason, her colleague/class TA, this was a great workshop and one I'd recommend taking. Jason, who is a self-taught programmer, had some really encouraging words for us and tips on how to keep learning and pushing through the challenges.
Learning to code is such an asset and definitely a sound career choice (we're constantly in need of developers at my agency). I feel like the time I'm spending learning to code will pay off in so many different ways both personally and professionally.
Here's a list of some amazing resources that I've bookmarked from taking these classes:
Michael Hartl's Ruby on Rails Tutorial
Railscasts - video tutorials on Ruby
Head First - book on PHP
HTML & CSS Fundamentals
Lynda.com's free lectures on SASS and LESS
Ruby diagram
Thanks Skillshare, GA, Mattan, Melissa and Jason.
