Gemünden seeks to explain Bertolt Brecht’s complete lack of success in Hollywood, a failure he seems to attribute to the fact that Brecht refused to assimilate. After eight years in the United States, he still considered himself an immigrant in exile. It seems as though Brecht tried to illustrate this dichotomy between exile and assimilation in his famous film Hangmen Also Die. It makes sense that this film was the only one of Brecht’s to make it onto the big screen, as it is blatantly Anti-Nazi, a sentiment that American’s were guaranteed to agree with. Most films in this era that dealt with Nazi Germany serves as reasoning for the American involvement in the war. However, Brecht's film does not seem to explain this justification, it is merely an Anti-Nazi film.
