Types of Sapphires & Their Colors
The sapphire likely took its name from the Latin word "saphir," meaning "blue stone." Sapphire was initially confused with Lapis Lazuli because of its similar color; later investigations have confirmed that sapphire belongs to the corundum mineral family.

Peridot: Most gem and jewellery tradesmen pronounce it "pear-a-doe" but others call it "pear-a-dot", I still don't know which is actually correct but I say "pear-a-doe" as taught by my gemmology tutor, but I don't think there's a wrong or right way. Peridot was first mined in quantity in the States, in the area of Peridot, Arizona. The name of that town is pronounced "pear-a-dot" so who knows! With its vibrant green colour and sparkly appearance it's one of my absolute favourite stones. And it's the birthstone for August and the 15th anniversary gemstone.
