#Repost @eastvillageneighbors with @get_repost ・・・ Beloved East Village iconic newsstand announced yesterday that it will not be reopening. Gem Spa opened in the 1920’s under a different name. It became Gem Spa in 1957. The newsstand became a favorite hangout from everyone from the Beats in the 60s to the Punks of the 80s. Along with local newspapers and magazines, Gem Spa was famous for selling a host of international and underground papers and magazines (although no pornography). They often got the magazines two days before other newsstands. Over the years, Gem Spa has been featured in TV shows and movies, most famously, “Desperately Seeking Susan” with Madonna. Although unconfirmed, Gem Spa has been cited as the birthplace of the Egg Cream. It might not have started there but they certainly served up an excellent one. #GemSpa #GemSpaClosing #Madonna #EggCream (at Gem Spa) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_704EPjftk/?igshid=ks9f38hsk68d
