These bats are found in Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama. They are not found at elevations above 2,400 m (7,900 ft), though most observations of them occur at around 300 m (980 ft). They prefer dry and semi-deciduous forests. In northern Europe, the Red Admiral is one of the last butterflies to be seen before winter sets in, often feeding on the flowers of ivy on sunny days. The Red Admiral is also known to hibernate, re-emerging individuals showing prominently darker colors than the first brood.
