Last night, the music gods blessed us with another beautiful Beach House song, as well as details regarding the beloved dream pop and slowcore duo’s next album. There seems to be a theme going on with the Maryland pair’s visuals for the two songs we’ve heard off ‘7′ so far. The trippy videos and their black and white patterns even remind me of Beach House’s Zebra. When matched with their dreamy swirling, kaleidoscopic whirling music, I can’t help but find myself wishing for a stereoscopic 360 video from the duo (yes, I recently purchased a Google Daydream VR headset, it’s no Oculus Rift, but it’s still pretty cool). New song Dive is well worthy of diving head first into. It may start fleecy and soft, but robust guitars soon pull us deeper and deeper into a deep rabbit hole, leaving us spinning in exhilaration. Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally will release 7 (probably named so because it is their seventh album) on May 11th. We’ll definitely be looking out for that pre-order link!
If you’ve a deep hankering for noisy pummeling rock, Sheffield’s PUREST have you covered. Always is their debut single, and it’s a glorious tidal wave of whirring shoegaze and thrumming post-punk. The newcomers' mission is to “create contemporary, noisy pop hooks and melodies.” Mission accomplished. Always is a massive tune, a My Bloody Valentine meets DIIV eruption of resonating sound. Underneath all that commotion is a pure and vernal pop melody. PUREST have made a resounding entrance with this first single. Always will get an official release on March 31st. It’ll be available on all digital platforms via Gold Tooth Records.
Day Wave, the indie project created by Oakland’s Jackson Phillips, has become one of the beloved shining stars of the Bay over the course of the two or so years we’ve been zealously covering his music. We’ve been waiting for news of a debut album for a very long time, and the May 5th arrival of The Days We Had gives us much cause for celebration. Day Wave boosts that jubilation with a new taste from the forthcoming full length, a gusty chugging, hearty shimmering second single named Something Here. Though Something Here is one of Jackson Phillips’ more uptempo bopping offerings, there’s still an unmistakable wistful dreaminess to the gauzy nostalgic piece. Day Wave’s forthcoming full length is described as a “euphoric collection of 11 beautifully crafted songs, which perfectly demonstrate multi-instrumentalist Jackson’s innate sonic understanding.” I expect The Days We Had to be blissful and sublime from start to finish.
Yumi Zouma is one of my favorite dream pop bands, but I find it rather heinous to describe their music in such a simplistic fashion. The Kiwis have given us a dashing array of music built on that aforementioned dreamy backbone. Heck, just listen to this amazing cover of Oasis’ She’s Electric! Yumi Zouma opts for a shoegaze whirring, lo-fi woozy approach on the heady song, which is but a part of their full album cover of Oasis’ “(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?” to arrive via Turntable Kitchen’s Sounds Delicious vinyl subscription series. Mmm... noisy buzzing, guitar reverberating deliciousness, indeed. The album will be out on April 6th and limited to 1000 copies. Learn more about the series, here.

It’s official, but two weeks into 2017, we already know it’s an epic year. Shoegaze legends Slowdive have made it so by dropping their very first material since 1995′s Pygmalion. That’s right, kids. Slowdive, THE Slowdive, is truly back. Star Roving, which comes by way Dead Oceans, is a sprawling hummer. It feels vast and expansive, just as its name suggest. We all go star roving with Slowdive. I’m more than satisfied with the one single, but I can’t help but wonder... does this mean we have a full album of material coming? I sure hope so. Download and stream the behemoth tune from other services, here.
