I hope you enjoy this silly piece of writing. As you can see, I couldn't decide which prompt I liked best, so I attempted as many as I could reasonably manage.
Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and that the coming year goes better than it did in canon!
A: Thanks for coming on such short notice, [6].
[6]: No problem! Happy to help!
A: Yeah. Can tell you had your coffee this morning. Look, I’ll level with you. There’s been…something of a security breach.
[6]: Oh, I hate those!
A: Yeah. At 08.01 three days ago, a plume of smoke was reported to the Carson City volunteer fire department, emanating from 38°23'2.28" N -116°04'9.00" W…
[6]: Is that supposed to mean something?
A: Right, of course, you didn’t get the files. It’s building Q, [6].
[6] Oh, right- did they get in?
A: Well, the fire’s out, so yes.
[6]. Ah. Fuck.
A: “Fuck,” indeed. Look, [6], I’ll level with you: the boys upstairs are asking questions. They think there’s too much going on in Nevada right now. I know for a fact that on the way to Building Q there’s a decent chance they might have stumbled across D-Com. It’s barely a few miles out.
[6]: Now that one's nothing to do with us.
A: Alright, but...at this point it's starting to feel like that patch of Nevada is nothing but secret facilities. And I gather your group has also earmarked some *more* land nearby to begin construction on…a prototype Rhizome? What’s a Rhizome?
[6}: Classified. Sorry.
A: [6], be reasonable. We've turned a blind eye to quite a few ethics violations on the basis of the intel you've shared with us. What is it about this one that makes it classified?
[6]: The fate of the world depends on you not knowing. Literally.
A: [6]... I'm going to deny you permission. We just can't host another multi-level-deniable facility in that grid space. Someone is going to connect the dots. Which brings us back, doesn’t it, to the point. We had a pretty major security breach today, and so far all you’ve said about it is one profanity.
[6]: Shit, you’re right.
A: Well, that makes two. So that’s- something.
[6]: Look, we can figure this out, ok? Clearly we can't keep constructing in the same square of land.
A: Absolutely not.
[6]: Fine, then. We'll do option B, then.
A: And that would be...
[6] Telling. But let's just say it's a hell of a moonshot.
A: Look, you won't be getting any more funding from us if you won't let us in on what your group is planning. It's as simple as that.
[6]: Oh, we don't need to worry about that. We're funded to the nines.
A: Oh? And how is that?
[6]: Because Crash Keys is the number one creator of escape rooms worldwide. We hold the patents to the Thursday Murder series, the Semper Phi series-
A: Seriously? Those books about the girl with superpowers in ancient Rome?
[6] Mmhm. Movie's out in June. And we also have the rights to Nihil Evadere-
A: No way. That series has been running for ever-
[6]: Oh yes. I'll let you in a secret if you like, the next release is set in the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
A: Hey, no spoilers!
[6]: I didn't tell you anything about the plot yet. But yeah, Sikh: A Way Out is the working title.
A:Fine, ok. You've convinced me. As long as the next construction of yours steers well clear of Nevada, the U.S. won't interfere, as long as you aren't expecting any more financial support.
[6] Sounds fine by me. So, are we done here?
A: Noooot quite. You see, we still have the issue of the witnesses. The people who entered a burning building where there wasn't supposed to be anything at all.
[6]: Right.
A: You see, we had prepared a liquidation team to respond-
[6]: I didn’t know S.O.I.S had their own fire-fighting department-
A: -it’s a metaphor, [6]. We mean, uh, a kill squad. To remove all witnesses.
[6]: Oh. Well, that’s hardly ethical.
A: Ethics don’t really enter into matters of national security.
[6] Noted.
A: We were wondering if, between both our organisations, we could work out some solution that doesn't require us to liquidate- uh, murder, that is, as in literally kill to death- these people. A plausible cover story to explain the presence of a facility housing a 1:1 Titanic replica in the middle of the Nevada desert.
[6]: It's actually the sister ship, the Olympic. Unlike her more famous relation, she was used as a hospital ship for...
A: You're *killing* me here. I don't think the distinction will matter much. As far as they're concerned, it's a Titanic replica. In the middle of the desert.
[6]: Oh, that's easy. Just tell them they're filming a reboot of the movie. In fact, can we, like, do that? Reboot the movie? How hard could it be?
A: Ok...I guess that does sort of make sense...but do you think they're dumb enough to fall for it?
In the grim steel bulkhead of the detention facility, Carlos tapped his feet restlessly.
This was turning out to be a rather unusual call.
The fire itself hadn't been anything to write home about- easily extinguished. It had only really been noteworthy because of its rather strange location- and, of course, the reaction that had been waiting for them when they emerged from the smoking obelisk. Men in suits with grim expressions and grimmer instructions. Go directly to the facility. Do not pass go. Do not collect two hundred dollars.
He'd been split up from the other members of his team, herded into individual detention cells, and quizzed extensively about the events of the afternoon. He'd just stuck to pure honesty; yes, it had been strange to see how prettily the building had been decorated, but his biggest priority had been getting the flames out, thank you very much. Whether his fellow firefighters had acted as allies or betrayers was as yet unknown.
Now, all at once, there came a rattling at the door; an oddly surruptitious rattling, as though the rattler was ashamed even to be rattling.Â
"Hello? Who is it?"
A slot opened in the door, and a file was dropped inside.
"Glory to Brother. May the Soul be Free, forever."
Confused, Carlos rose and slammed a hand into the door. "Who the hell-?"
But there was no reply. Confused, he opened the gilded covers of the file, and read what was therein. It made little sense.
"Infiltrate Rhizome-9. Eliminate the Old Woman. If this step fails..."
Carlos read on, feeling his mind rebel in utter confusion. What on Earth was this about?
It would take some convincing to assure him that this mysterious event was nothing more than viral marketing for one of Crash Keys’ new media ventures.
