I took a five day weekend since it’s the winter school holidays. I sorely needed the break, and even though I didn’t get to do all I wanted to do - a lot still happened:
Went out for dinner at a Spanish restaurant (Movida), with a voucher I won at work last year; we had an almost $400 dinner and it only cost us $35.
Planted up about a dozen pots of succulents, and expanded the succulent garden outside our dining room window (trying to distract from the boring view of the boundary fence).
Dropped off several shopping bags’ of stuff to the opshop as we continue cleaning stuff from the living room.
Cleaned the deck and set up an area to paint mural panels (again, more distractions from the boring fence view - especially once the new kitchen windows go in).
Painted the undercoat on the cement sheet panel for the first mural, measured out grid lines, and transposed almost all of the first image (only 8 out of 32 squares to fill!).
Caught F’s head cold (tested negative for all the things on the home test kits), and had a fever dream convinced that this was the end of me… but in the next dream/delirium was stressing about what will go in the new storage in the living room.
Back to work tomorrow. I’ll work from home since I’m full of snot, but have been feeling so much better today. I missed out on doing the extra pottery studio sessions I’d planned - at least I survived the fever so there’s still time for more of them when I stop needing to blow my nose every five minutes.
Despite it all or in spite of it all, I’m feeling happy today. I slept well and my weird dreams were interesting-weird (not scary-weird). I went for a 5km walk this morning and saw lots of cool birds and checked out the works the local council is doing at a park (lots of native plantings and it’s going to be an awesome nature walk in the next couple of years). On my way back I chatted to our friends who live around the corner (they both arrived home as I was walking past their place). The builder who’s doing our kitchen / living room renovation came over and we worked out some of the fine contract details, and he might be able to start the living room part of the works sooner than expected. The husband and I went to Bunnings (or if you’ve watched Bluey, Hammerbarn), and looked at paint colours and plants and other interesting things. We came home and the sun is shining and I picked half of my basil and shoved it in the dehydrator. I’m going to do a bit more gardening for another hour or so. Tonight we’re going out for hotpot with family friends.
It’s just been a really lovely Saturday.
Did some pruning. Decided to give some of the offcuts to a friend as a leafy bouquet.
(The leaves are so soft! I love the subtle purples on the stems! It’s such a pretty plant. Acacia binervia - Acacia Stirling Silver.
Busy Sunday - and even better, tomorrow is a public holiday (bonus extra weekend!). I didn’t sleep particularly well last night but somehow still got so much done. I rode my bike to drop off some seedlings to some friends and pick up my prescriptions, and I always forget how much I enjoy running errands on my bike instead of by car. It takes more time but it’s much more fun.
Then gardening - in addition to prepping the wicking beds, I wanted to try and rodent proof the three beds that already have cages over the top. (It’s kind of hard to explain - see below - but basically even with cages, all my carrots of nibbled or uprooted, tomatoes got stolen, so trying to minimise that kind of issue). We added additional wire, and the husband added the garden edging to minimise any entry points. More cable ties and wire to be added, and to figure out a door type situation for the front opening - at least now I feel more confident planting out the beds again. (Not that I’m planting much that will get nibbled coming into winter - mostly greens and garlic).
I did the bulk of weeding over the last couple of weekends, and since then there’s been heaps of seeds sprouting. A lot of mustard greens, parsley, silverbeet and various weeds. Instead of digging them all in, parsley seedlings were dug out and redistributed to friends and the micro greens that I could ID got snipped and added to tonight’s dinner. Glad I’ve finally got at least these beds sorted out and I can stop feeling so overwhelmed by my garden.
Next project will get getting a raised bed sorted for several blueberry bushes and probably also some midyum berry plants (Austromyrtus dulcis; native berries that are low growing and taste kind of like a mint/menthol blueberry).

We went for a little bushwalk this afternoon. F had suggested it initially, but then moaned that we weren’t going to do a super strenuous hike. About 20min in, his attitude was much improved and we ended up having a good hour or so hiking along a creek up in the hills.
Earlier, I planted some seedlings in one of my veg beds. A few lettuces, some basil, and an eggplant. It’s a little late in the season for the eggplant but we’ll see what happens. Better late than never? I’ve never had much luck with eggplants either but still worth a shot. (Maybe if I pamper it?).
The weekend goes too fast - I’m not ready for a full week of work.

One of my tea trees (in my front garden) is flowering for the first time. Only a few blossoms so far, each is slightly larger than a cherry blossom (or slightly smaller than an apple blossom), and the tree is covered in flower buds. I can’t wait until it’s in full bloom!
