Gamma was awoken the moment she was.  He had felt the slightest jolt from the mattress, causing his instincts to kick in and become aleart by the time she let out another gasping breath.  His hands fell onto her bare shoulders and roped them into a comforting embrace, ears alert to any out of place noise or voices.  “Boss, what’s wrong?”

“I . . N-Nothing . . . it’s nothing.”

He frowned.  “Boss, I refuse to believe it’s nothing.”

“It was just a dream, Gamma.” Aria, Boss of the Giglo Nero familgila, glanced down at her pillow before pushing herself out of Gamma’s arms and lying back down.  

“With you, nothing is ‘just a dream.’”

She let out a sigh, rolling over on her side from under the covers.  It was hard to hide anything from Gamma when it came to her well being.  He constantly worried about her and almost had a sixth sense as to when she was upset or troubled.  She found it harder and harder to lie to him each day.  “Okay, you got me.  It was one of my prophetic dreams.”

“Of course." Gamma lied himself back down, facing her with a concerned expression on his face.  “Would it be too invasive to ask what about?”

“It concerns you. And everyone.  Though, it was vague as to what exactly caused it.”  The gleam in her orange eyes began to dwindle as he recalled her dream.  “Genkishi . . . I had a dream he’d betray us.”

“What?” Gamma instantly sat back up, more shocked than Aria.  “Genkishi?  He’d never betray you, Boss! It was probably just a nightmare--”

“I’ve never had a nightmare that didn’t come true in some way, Gamma.  Again, I’m not sure how but I just saw Genkishi in a dark armor attacking one of our allies.”

“No! No . . . he’d never do that, you know that!  He’s one of our most loyal men.  For him to betray the family, it would just crush us.”  He didn’t want to show it but Aria could see the tears pooling in his eyes.  She’d learned a lot of things about Gamma over the years, the biggest thing being that behind the tough exterior he cared deeply for his famigila.  She wrapped herself around him, kissing him softly on his forehead.  “Shh, c’mere . . . don’t worry.  Everything will be okay.”

“No . . . Aria, he won’t betray us.  I-I’m sure.”

33. “Please don’t do this.

“Another skirmish on the outskirts of Calabria, nii-san?”

“Afraid so.”

“Gesso, right?”

Gamma let out a disgrunted sigh.  “Of course, who else?  The Gesso have been on our asses for months now, I don’t expect anything less.  According to the scouts, they’ve killed at least ten people and have threatened a hostage exchange.”

Nosaru snorted angrily, hopping up on his gray appaloosa steed.  “Damnit. C’mon, let’s hurry!”

“Nosaru! Wait for the others.  We leave together, remember?”

“Tazaru-nii, shut your face!”

Gamma let out a sigh to relax himself from the sudden tension in the air.  Genkishi was out on his own mission so he couldn’t ask him to make sure things were fine while he was gone.  He stood near his white horse, patting it on the rump lovingly as he reviewed the crude map the returning scouts had drawn.  He jumped in surprise as he felt soft arms wrap around his waist.

“Please don’t do this?”

“Huh? Boss?” He turned his head around to look at the black-haired woman burring her face into his back.  “Boss, this is no different than any other fight.  Actually I’m pretty sure we had worse.”

“No.  Please don’t do this, Gamma. Don’t leave.”

The urgency in her voice casued chills to freeze on his spine and fingers.  He turned himself around in her embrace, placing a warm hand on the top of her head.  “What’s wrong?  This is not like you.”

There was a moment of silence followed by Aria lifting her tear-stained face off Gamma’s chest to look straight at him with clouded eyes.  “If you go, I feel something bad will happen.  I’m not sure what but I feel as if someone will die if you leave.”

He went pale.  Aria had the same clairvoyance as her late mother and had predicted many things right ever since he’d met her years ago and joined the family.  And to see such a strong, independent leader as herself suddenly reduced to petty tears and an almost fragile state alarmed him.  I feel as if someone will die if you leave.  He crouched down just a bit so his face was level with hers.  He leaned in, kissing her sweet, soft lips.

“I promise I won’t die.  There’s no need to cry.  I also promise that whomever dies will do it in your name and for the good of our family.” He pressed his forehead to hers, a finger touching the tattoo underneath her eye.  “We’re doing this for you, Lady Aria.  If you wish, you can come with us.  There’s no one holding you back; only your own words.  Just say the word and we’ll stop.”

She glanced down at the ground, tears starting to dry up but her face still full of worry and regret.  That was her one weakness when it came to being the Boss of the Giglo Nero; she hated to lose even one member to death.  Many teased that it was because she was a woman but Gamma knew it was because her heart was so pure that she felt for each member as an extension of herself and it killed her each time.

She hugged him tighter, returning the kiss solemly.  “No.  I know this is important.  And, I feel as if your promise will be fufilled.” She pulled a hand back to wrap around the orange pendant in a ribbon about her neck.  “Yes . . . you’ll be fine.”

As she let go of him to bid him and the others goodbye, her eyes changed from a state of worry to a placid face of what looked like agony and regret.  Even as she waved goodbye, she didn’t shed any more tears.  But her hand never left the warm glow of her pendant.  The last thing Gamma remembered of her was her blowing him a kiss as he rode off into the paths on his horse.

The Giglo Nero won the skirmish that day.  They had beaten the Gesso again.  But, after knowing about Aria’s prophecy, the squad was surprised to learn that not a soul had died in combat.  But, on their way back home, a messanger relayed the news no one expected but Aria herself.

23. “Just once.”

“Are you joking?”

The boss of the Gigolo Nero family didn’t mind getting down and dirty out on the field if a mission required it.  Spending a night or two at the local bar to try and gather information was certainly something she was used to.  Her irrisistable charm mixed with her glowing personality (as she’d been told) attracted just the right people to glean information and illegal deals off of.

That included her right-hand man.

“No, I’m not joking! Come on, give me a kiss!”

“Gamma, not only are you stone drunk but do you realize where we are?  Come on,” Aria pouted, swirling the liquor in her glass.  “Have some decency.”

“Didn’t you just sleep with a dude last night to get something?  Who’s bein indecent?”

“Gamma, we’re in public.  I insisted you’d come to protect me but we can’t make such a scene out here.  I don’t want you to be in danger.”

The man swung his buff arm over her square shoulders, leaning in close so their cheeks touched.  “I’ll be fine, my Queen.  Come on, I just want a kiss.” He leaned in close to her ear.  “And people will just think I’m some drunk guy giving you a bit of sugar.”

The laughed.  Her arm wrapped around Gamma’s torso, squeezing a bit of his belly fat awfully hard.  She leaned into him, her bright amber eyes locking gazes with him.

“I’m sorry, Sir Gamma but . . . she passed on.”

He refused to believe it.  She was perfectly healthy when he left for his mission to northern Europe.  She’d helped load up his horse with the needed supplies, check his pistol for problems and had even gone low enough to make sure his suit was crisp and starched, something she hardly ever did for anyone.  Before he left, she’d given him a hug that lasted more than a minute and a gentle kiss on his cheek.  Nothing at all was wrong with her. He was only gone for a week and a half.

How could she have gotten so sick and succumbed in that short amount of time? 

He felt his heart shatter as he walked into her bedroom where she still lie in her bed, a porcelain white tone to her skin.  He reached out to touch her neck, hoping there was still a faint pulse but all he felt was an icy cold.  A small smile still lie motionless on her dry lips.  He tried to fight back the tears, his fingers brushing over her cheek.

“Boss.  Boss, please.  Please, wake up.”  He checked her pulse again, pressing deeper against her jugular in vain hope it was still there.  “Boss, wake up.  Look at me.”  He turned her face to him.  No movement, no pulse, no warmth, no breathing.  There was no sign of life anywhere.  

With a wail, he gripped his fingers on the corpse’s shoulders.  “Aria!  Aria please!  Just breathe, okay?  Please! Look at me! Just breathe!  P-Please . . . Aria, I’m here now.  I-I’m . . . “
