Gamescom 2022 just wrapped up this last Monday and there were tons of games showcased and demoed for almost a week. Even though not all of it were initially announced in the Germany-based event, most have more trailers and gameplays featured, making us look forward to it in the coming months or years! Hereโs a list of games that all should keep a lookout for and wishlist after Gamescom 2022, in no particular order!
1. Callisto Protocol
While the game has already been announced a few months ago and featured in previous events, Gamescom was able to exclusively feature the gameplay/combat trailer. This gives us an insight into how to battle the undead monstrosities roaming around the prison facility set on Jupiterโs moon, Callisto. No doubt that the gameplay trailer gives out classic Dead Space mechanics, added with a few simple additions, as it is also spearheaded by the same creator of the said game!
Dead Space is currently having its first game remade and will be released sometime next year. But if youโre already itching for a similar game with a fresh story and cast of characters, then this one's for you as this will be coming out this year, December 2! The game will also feature known names such as Josh Duhamel and the gameโs protagonist, Jacob Lee. Karen Fukuhara of the โThe Boysโ and Sam Witwer, who previously played Starkiller of Star Wars: Force Unleashed, and Deacon St. John of Days Gone are part of the amazing cast.
2. Dead Island 2
This is the one game that no one really thought will make an appearance in the event! Ten years after the release of the first game, the series makes a comeback by debuting two new trailers, one is a reveal video while the other is for gameplay. The former showing where the game is located, while the latter shows a gory yet action-packed presentation of its mechanics with a heavy emphasis on melee combat and a few snippets of the gameโs plot. Unlike the original Dead Island game, this one doesnโt take place on an isolated and fictitious island but in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and an unknown third location in California.
With the unexpected comeback and two stunning trailers, Dead Island 2 looks to be a banger of a game! As it may have spent some time in development for almost a decade, surely this will be another success for the series and make a mark on the gaming industry and the zombie horror genre like its predecessor!
3. Lies of P
Have you ever thought of what weโll get if we combine Pinocchio, Bloodborne/Dark Souls, and Timothee Chalamet? Neither did we, but someone did and even made it into a video game! Developed and published by Neowiz Games and Round 8 Studio, the game gives us a darker take on the beloved character of Pinnochio with Souls-like gameplay and is set in a grim European-based setting. Unlike the Disney adaptation, this one puts the player in the shoes of the titular character and has to battle monsters roaming around the streets of the fallen city of Krat to find a mysterious person, named โMr. Geppettoโ, and in hopes of becoming a human! ย What makes the game more intriguing is the developers made Pinnochioโs main aspect of lying into a gameplay system. The developers promised that players would be put in situations during the journey where they will have to lie to save themselves or others. This would surely affect the overall in-game world which will either make things easier or harder for both the player and Pinnochio.
Now that more gameplay is seen in Gamescom, Lies of P is surely able to easily cater to the fans of the Bloodborne/Souls series, while the story will draw in those who want to see this brand new, darker spin on the classic tale of a puppet that just wishes to be a human! Lies of P is set to be released sometime in 2023.
4. Warhammer 40K: Darktide
If youโre looking for a first-person shooter game that you and your pals can enjoy, then this one is a grimdark game that you should look out for! Warhammer 40,000: Darktide takes you into the chaotic, grimdark future of humanity where chaos and heresy looms. The game takes place in Tertium, a sprawling hive city that is on a brink of destruction, while you play as a โrejectโ, someone whoโs been reported by your fellow men of committing blasphemous acts against the Emperor of Mankind, such as not wanting to eat corpse starch due to its taste. You are then tasked to investigate a possible Chaos infiltration of the city, pitting against heretics and monstrosities alike. All in the name of mankind and the Emperor!
For gamers that enjoy co-op games that pit against hordes of enemies and those that are interested in the rich yet grimdark lore of Warhammer 40K then this is one great game for you. Unlike Vermintide, a similar game under the same banner yet with a different setting, this game allows customization to player characters, allowing immersion in the game. It will also serve as a good entry point for those interested in the overall series of Warhammer 40k as it will give a taste of what the 40k series is all about, especially with the themes of Chaos, heresy, and the grimdark future of humanity. This game is also perfect for those looking for a good time with their friends as the game highly recommends playing it with 3 other people since most encounters will have hordes of enemies rushing it. The game will also feature either ranged or melee combat.
Purge the unclean and let rejects rise on November 30, 2022!
5. Edge of Sanity
Unlike the other games on the list that screams big budget, this one looks to have less yet aims to deliver big screams instead! Showcased in Gamescomโs Future Games Show, Edge of Sanity is a side-scrolling survival game that takes place in Alaska and the player has to look for a missing group of scientists. Armed with only an axe, the player must traverse the snow-covered lands to find out what happened to the men while looking out for dangers that may not look like what it seems to be! ย
Although the trailer was simplistic, as it only revealed where the game takes place and just showed what the enemy may look like in the mind of the player, one can head over to the gameโs Steam page to learn more than wishlist the game. The developers mentioned that complete base management and story-rich expeditions will be an integral part of the game, adding variety to the game and making it more interesting as players have to manage people that are already at the brink of their mindโs wit while planning future expeditions to know more about what happened around the place. Hopefully, we get to see more media on how things are implemented in the game and what to look out for as it is aimed to be released around 2023!
6. A Plague Tale: Requiem
Picking up months after the events of Innocence, we see the sibling duo of Amicia and Hugo on another dangerous adventure as they look for a cure for Hugoโs blood disease while facing the French Inquisition and swarming, disease-ridden rats! Mainly showcased in Xbox Booth in Gamescom 2022, players are given a full and deeper dive presentation of what the sequel is all about. Amicia, is a more mature, resourceful fighter, while Hugo has a double-edged newfound ability that includes controlling the rats. The Gamescom presentation also featured the people that will encounter along the way and the places they will need to traverse to find the much-needed cure. As well as the dangers they will face that will put their lives in peril and goals to halt!
If you enjoyed the first game then this one is something to look forward to as much of the mechanics were improved for this next game in the series. This is mostly shown in Amiciaโs combat ability as she is now able to wield a crossbow and would not die in one hit. She would also be able to return to stealth after being discovered and counter-attacks can be done as well. Hugo can now control the rats to overwhelm any enemies along the way. Speaking of rats, the game now features 30,000 rats versus the 5,000 it has in the first game! The game is bound for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S this coming October 18, 2022!
7. System Shock Remake
Long overdue and awaited, the System Shock remake also makes its appearance within Gamescom with a very special trailer that involves SHODAN being the trailer narrator! Featured in the Future Game Show segment of the event, the trailer has SHODAN, voiced by Terri Brosius (The same voice actor for the character of the original game), which gives us a quick introduction to Citadel Station. At the same time, she states her disgust against humanity and mocks the player character, the Hacker. The game then shows mixed snippets of its first-person shooter combat and some of the hacking minigames, which the game is also known for, that will be in the final version of the remake. The video also features some of the โchildrenโ and creations that SHODAN had made, which the Hacker will encounter and have to fight along the way!
The game trailer ends with no release date or year, leaving us to wait for more information from Nightdive Studios. With the way that it looks though, it seems like it is closer to being complete and released to the marker. It just needs an official date. That doesnโt stop System Shock Remake from being a game to look out for. System Shock is a series that is underrated yet can be credited as an influential game as it was able to provide some footprints to blockbuster games such as Dead Space and BioShock, in terms of story and gameplay-wise.
These are the games that you can consider adding to your wishlist, keep a look forward to, and maybe even pre-order after Gamescom 2022. Some games may not be featured on the list, though feel free to comment on which ones you think should be on our list or something you are waiting for personally!ย
