CAN WE TAKE A MOMENT TO APPRECIATE JAMIE CAMPBELL BOWER
So this guy
Has been Caius in the Twilight Saga
And Jace Herondale from the Mortal Instruments
And Young Gellert Grindelwald in the HP movies and the Fantastic Beast movies
That covers three MAJOR fandoms. Hate Twilight all you want, but you have to admit it is a huge fandom. This one actor has been a vampire that’s part of a super infamous group (the Volturi), one of the best shadow hunters OF ALL TIME, AND THE GREATEST DARK WIZARD SECOND ONLY TO VOLDEMORT.
He’s also played tons of other roles too, like Anthony from Sweeney Todd
and
HE’S GONNA BE IN GAME OF THRONES

Okay, let’s talk about Daenerys...
I’m gonna make this quick, because I’m really pissed off, and because a lot of things have already been said by better people than me.
During the last couple of days, I’ve watched A LOT of analysis explaining why this new season of Game of Thrones is so disappointing. And yet, I can’t help but being surprised by the lack of commentaries on Daenerys.
Like, come on guys. I know a lot of you dislike her (to stay polite). I know she can be preachy, and stubborn, and exceptionnally annoying sometimes. But she’s not JUST that. And this last season has been particularly unfair to her and to what she has accomplished over the last few years.
My first issue comes with the first episode, when Sam asks Jon if Daenerys would be willing to sacrifice her ambitions for the throne. This question implies that the answer is « no ». But in fact… it is « yes » ?
How many times did we see Daenerys sacrifice her own immediate and personnal goal for the sake of her people ? She could have left Slavers’ Bay and sail to King’s Landing as soon as she got her fleet. She didn’t. She stayed to prevent the slaves from falling right back into slavery again.
She could have attacked King’s Landing as soon as she arrived in Westeros. She didn’t. She tried another strategy in order to spare the innocent people of the city (these very same people she seems perfectly okay to burn down to ashes in S8, but we’ll get back to that later…).
She could have ignored Jon Snow and his great war in order to take advantage of Cersei right now and get the throne. SHE DIDN’T. She took her whole army, and her dragons, right into the North, abandonning her advantage against Cersei, to fight for the greater good. For the survival of HUMANITY. And yet, you want us to believe that she’s somehow going mad ? That she’s going to forget everything about her ideals, goals, and previous values, just because of what, the Northerners are mean to her ?
I mean, this is really bad writing. Back when she was in Meereen, Daenerys was horrified to discover that her dragon had killed an innocent three year old girl. And now, you want us to believe that she is okay with burning hundreds of thousands of innocents ?
You can make your character evolve this way. You can make a good character turn evil. But you have to do it subtly. You cannot just throw this change onto the character without no further justification.
As for now, we have only seen Daenerys do something truely wrong twice : when she crucified the masters in Meereen, and when she burned the Tarlys alive. These actions were mistakes and had consequences. Daenerys LEARNED from it. That’s what her storyline has always been about : a young and inexperienced girl, trying to make the world a better place, and learning how to become a great ruler. Come on, she’s got much more experience than Jon Snow on this matter ^^
She has been training for the last 7 seasons. She had to make mistakes in order to grow. This whole mad queen plot doesn’t make any sense.
Is it just me ? Do the showrunners, the viewers, and literaly every single character on that show, suffer from total amnesia ?
What pisses me off the most is how they insist on pretending that Jon Snow had NO CHOICE but to bend the knee. That he did it in order to gain Daenerys’ support. This is not true. Watch the episode once again, you dumbass. Daenerys agreed to help him BEFORE he bent the knee ! She agreed to help him without asking ANYTHING IN RETURN ! Stop treating her like she’s a fucking bad guy.
Right now, she’s just a leader who agreed to sacrifice her conquest in order to save the world, who lost her child and several of her closest friends along the way, who discovered that her lover is her nephew AND has a better claim than her to the Iron throne, and that nobody gives a fuck about her or woud even feel grateful. I too would be a bit pissed off about all of this, wouldn’t you ?
The writing of this character in S8 is terrible. And it is so lame. What a shame to end Daenerys’ narrative arc with all this family madness bullshit. So was this all this was about ? All of her sufferings and mistakes and achievements were all for nothing, she was just destined to go mad right from the start, because of some genetical heritage ? This deprives all her story from any meaning. Now it just feels pointless.
And don’t you get the feeling that it is a bit predictable too ? What could possibly happen now ? We know that Varys wants to betray her (which coming from him makes absolutely no sense at all, since she hasn’t done anything wrong yet, since he knows her for years, and since he was the one who helped her survive since she was a baby…). We all know that Daenerys is going to find out in one way or another. Since she promised Varys back in S7 to burn him alive if he ever betrayed her, this is obviously what’s gonna happen. It’s gonna be the trigger for her so-called madness, and Jon will have no choice but to kill her, or something like that or whatever.
Who cares ? How is that a compelling ending ? It’s not even a beautiful tragic ending, because it is PREDICTABLE ! And it gives me this annoying feeling that it was just a « clever » solution to put aside Daenerys and justify Jon’s ascension to the throne…
MEH.
This annoys me. This whole fucking season annoys me. Sorry for the language guys. Sorry because I didn’t manage to keep it short in the end… I’ll go and try to relax now ^^
Don’t forget that whether or not you like a character, you have to ask yourself if this character acts according to his stated personality. In the previous seasons, Daenerys had always shown compassion, ALWAYS, and even though her decisions were not always the wisest, and she could be stubborn, she always listened to her advisers, and took the good decisions in the end. Right now, I feel like Daenerys has become a complete stranger.
What do you think ?
