Eccoci qui ragazzi, stiamo lavorando per allargare i nostri orizzonti con una nuova rubrica… GAMEDOC!

In questa rubrica racconteremo, a modo nostro, le storie di vere e proprie leggende del passato, che hanno fatto la storia del gaming!

Per fare qualcosa di così importante serviva un filmato d’apertura…

What can I say, love makes you blind, not to mention stupid. Now, the damage is done, he’s taken advantage of the light to lock me up and to release his henchmen of the night.

How can you possibly help me, you wonder? It is all very simple (I mean, don’t worry, you only have the destiny of the world in your hands, but that’s just a small detail), you are going to operate Lugh. You can make him jump or go forwards and backwards by controlling the light of the lantern. There are two ways to do so: by lowering and augmenting the light intensity. The lantern will help you to confront the monsters and to go through different obstacles.

Hi there, Today we’ll share more about the project (as promised on the last post!) You remember the 3 points about Orikami ? There is Origami, Plateform and Lost Level. But that’s not all. Orikami is about folding a paper. But we decided that we will make a thing a little more challeging for you : you can only take the four corner of the paper. Because it’s fun.

Mecanics

You have two types of fold during the game. Valley fold, and Letter fold, as we named it. The valley fold is a classic one, you all know what it is. See the illustration below. You can’t do a mountain fold muhahaha

However, the Letter fold is about taking the corner you just made to do another fold. See the illustration below.

Camera

The camera is fix, he doesn’t move while you’re playing the game. It is a 2D game.

Character  As we said, it is a 2D game. You see your character’s profil, in a piece of paper, like this :

Controls Classic one are programmed for the prototype alpha and beta of Orikami. For the gold version, we tend to research how to do a pathfinding system. The main idea is to draw a line that Kami could interprete and execute in-game. For now, as students, we do not have much time for this research yet. So basically, we have arrows left and right and a jump button.

Storyline

The orikami were animal lifeform made from paper. They lived happily. But one day, the God of paper lost his control : that causes the orikami to lost their hearts. A big disaster for the God of paper, that create a new lifeform : Kami, the new race of the Guardian of paper. A sort of assistant if you want.   In Kami’s world, there’s only left lifeless orikami. If they don’t live, they will disappear through space and time, in every world, even ours. It is the duty of Kami to bring them back to life.

Art Direction

Well... we are making the game in real origami. What possibly go wrong ?

Well now, we have the answer. In short, photoshoped paper was not the answer. It was our first attempt to make a game about paper. So we made mistakes, and we understood this : “if you want to make a game about origami, do the origami then. You see, you tried, it doesn’t work. It is too fake.”   Paper has a special texture that is not easy to make in 3D or 2D. The shadows was the main problem. Origami are really difficult to make on computer. It is a volume paper that has a thousand of shadows. So it easier to take pictures and then work on those photos.
