i explained it on a different blog but i'll talk about it here too. to me i'm interpreting benry and stain both as the same person and as completely different people, because i like to interpret their existances so far as opposing forces of the same entity. they are, ultimately, the same exact person, DNA/code/NPC wise, they are the same. stain is just as if benry was copy and pasted from the begining of HL2VRAI into a different world. they both come from the same "starting" point, waking up exactly where they were in that exact NPC model, with essentially the same motives and same goals. but because the motives and goals are so vague and abstract, it's not like Stain wakes up and is confused that he isn't a security guard. All he knows he needs to do is be an NPC in a videogame and follow Gordon around, which was all Benry had too. they then both sort of ended up playing their role off of "context."
the gameclam VR machine functions a lot like dream logic, you know when you get dropped into a dream and end up just playing the role based on whatever context you've been given the moment before? how your surroundings tend to dictate whats happening inside you internally instead of vice versa? i imagine this is how many of the AI NPCs function. so when Benrey wakes up in his security uniform at the check in area at the begining of the game, through that context the AI is able to develop an idea of what Benrey is supposed to be and what he should do even if that information didn't exist "prior." Stain is similar, but unlike Benrey who had a whole facility to absorb into who he is, a suit and coworkers, Stain woke up in a fucking hole. His context was "hole." This alone is what started the biggest and first difference between the two, Stain only had what was around him to introduce himself to Gordon which immediately and inherently changed their dynamic, swinging it into a more "kind" and "positive" form of relationship than before.
stain doesn't remember being benrey, ultimately i'd also imagine they have different bodies? in a similar way to coomers clones or additional voices, i think whatever benrey and stain "share" exists outside their bodies. i think they are like if two clones in a hivemind were seperated and went through different stories.

ultimately i think even if benrey and stain are the same person i may seperate rhem in my au. im kind of already toying with the idea od good and evil selves but if he is revealed to be benrey i think the nature of the series would make it really easy for me to be like qell they split into seperate selves the end. also i just want to see benrey stain interactions or drsw them myself.
benrey and stain can be understood as, essentially, a "copy" of eachother. it's not so much that benrey is the original and stain is a copy of benrey but that they are both essentially the same npc spawned in different maps, and the moment they were "spawned" was the moment they started existing- due to their opposite pathways, they've developed into two different people. maybe right in the moment they were created they were the same person but even with the uniform difference between the two it set a perminant difference between the two. of course they develop into two different people, because one is wearing a security guard uniform and one is barefoot in a giant sewer wasteland. theyd develop different traits simply from that alone. but at their core, they are the same person. a lot of their personality differences come simply from the fact that they "developed" through different types of interactions, with Gordons defining Benreys through "positive reinforcement" of Benreys bad behaviors and defining Stains through (attempted) positive reinforcement for his good behaviors. Benrey gets rewarded with attention for antagonizing Gordon, it brings Gordons eyes on him when he acts out and so he continues to do so. Stain gets rewarded with attention for doing good, but Stain also gets rewarded with attention when he's doing bad AND when he's specifically lying about being injured or sad so. you know. Gordons not doing a very good JOB at reinforcing positive behaviors, but there's still room for him to be "better" than Benrey.

i really like the way that stain ends up being gordons weird little leech parallels the way that benrey basically only antagonized gordon. the way that gordon ends up rotating around these two characters feels so similar to me, except instead of getting unbelievably angry at stain like he did with benrey hes just constantly perplexed and trying to "manage" him. its great.
Gordon probably shouldn't be a play tester anymore with the way the early-development devices are affecting his mental health and physical health but he continues to anyways, people think it's because he's desperate for money or that Mistar Whyte is forcing him to, but in reality its just because Gordon is like utterly pathologically obsessed with trying to help these people who hate him and aren't even real. He gets cute aggression. He sees an ai model almost kill itself and he feels worse than he ever has in his life, he has to help them learn how to walk and be friends and eat food or he'll die. He's probably not a very mentally stable person.
the way alyx stalks and looms over gordon and bubby and addi during the bubbys lab scene is so good
