Trerdm
[‘trɛr•d(ə)m]
1. a village, located near the Southern coast of the Southern-most island of the archipelago that spans The Rift.
2. air constantly touched by Rift and salt, the shift of sand mixed with soil, many hands coming together, shells and waxen leaves and smoothed glass, a circle of children laughing as if a single family, sun dancing through leaves, clouds gathering on the ebbing horizon, nets strung and tied, the comfort of Infernal crackling like a hearth.
<lesser Infernal trer land; dmen home>
Trerdm is small village that is home to an almost entirely tiefling community. The current population hovers somewhere around 1400. Most are born, grow-up and die within the boundaries of this town, never leaving.
The community was formed out of what was thought was necessity. Centuries ago, the first founders of the village had suffered great discrimination because of their race. They were cast out of most other communities and ended up coming together to form a community where they could be safe. The views on tieflings have become more welcoming, at least universally, but those within Trerdm, for the most part, still fear that discrimination.
The social structure is communal to a fault. Government, too, is communal -- decisions made by group meeting and democracy. In only the most dire of cases, an elected board of village elders make a final ruling. In terms of commerce, there is a barter system of both goods and services with tal rarely changing hands. Though, there is a village coffer for the purchase of necessities from the neighboring Arrunboro that many contribute to through sale of crafts, services and goods at that city, when needed.
The village has a tropical to temperate climate, mostly warm and often rainy. Due largely to the topographical structure, there are often winds that move through the village and surrounding areas.
The village is set in a large clearing that abuts a section of cliffs, to the South. To the North and East, the trees get thicker, closer together to a wooded area that creates a moderate partition between Trerdm and the nearest city, Arrunboro. This area is often traveled and only low-level creatures dwell here, usually keeping to themselves. To the West, a wide stretch of meadow spans out and over, past the trees.
Arrunboro once at one time a sort of “resort” city--largely made up of wealthy individuals and their second homes. The economy and demographics have since shifted to a more stable and diverse community. This city has several ports and many trading relationships. On foot, it’s only a few hours’ journey to Arrunboro from Trerdm. As such, this is the main source of any goods that the village requires.

→ just on the west side of the Great Forest at the center of Lolander lies a small village, hidden in the shadow of the forest’s tall trees. fairly isolated from the rest of Lolander by the wide and untraversable span of the forest, the people of Fallon live in relative isolation, though they depend on outside trade.
→ Fallon’s population is almost entirely human -- during Bren’s childhood, they were the only non-human in the village, and they were treated with suspicion because of it, but the town’s history has its fair share of halflings and half-elves passing through.due to the shadow of the humongous trees of the forest, there is little sunlight to make for sustainable farming or agriculture; this, the population sustains itself primarily on foraging resources from the near-edges of the woods. many of its residents are lumberjacks or proficient carpenters, taking advantage of the plentiful woods, while others make a profit from the abundant herbs, flowers, berries, and mushrooms found throughout the forest floor, trading these with merchants from other cities for goods like meat and grains that they cannot supply themselves.
→ due to its proximity to the forest, the people of Fallon have long been devoted to Sylaria, goddess of the thorn and vine; there is a modest stone temple set up in her honor within the town, but her worship is primarily a passive thing, the occasional offering of food or flowers and prayers only when people are desperate. Sylaria is an inattentive goddess, mostly believe, who only intervenes in times of desperation.
→ because Fallon’s population is so dependent on the forest itself for food, trade goods, and resources, its steady decline over the past half a century led the town first to become destitute, and eventually to become nearly inhabitable. though Bren has not been back in forty-some years, the last they heard most of the people living in the town had either died or moved somewhere safer and more prosperous, leaving only a few behind.

The largest city on the largest of the islands south of Haelion, Shael is a center of trade and culture to the southern tip of Haelion. With its bay offering some protection from the cruel sea separating Haelion and Lolander, many who do end up traveling across it either leave from Shael, or first dock there after the perilous journey across. Most of the economy is based on trade, although not all trade done is completely fair. As such, it is a rich city, with a variety of people from all over finding a home there. It’s not uncommon at all to find people of all races stopping in the city, and even staying, as long as they have something to give in return for finding shelter there.
First and foremost, though, the city is devoted to order. As hospitable as they are to travelers and outsiders, there is a certain way things are done there, and they don’t tolerate anyone upsetting that order. In fact, the main goddess worshipped in the city is Oyja, goddess of order, with a grand temple carved from the ridged stone of the mountains in the center of city, many of whom’s brothers and sisters sit on the city’s high council, helping keep justice and order in place. The temple takes in orphans of the city, raising them to care for the temple and take over as they grown older, just as Phoenix was meant to.
Still, along with the wealth of material, there is a thriving community devoted to magical arts as well, seeking the knowledge and wisdom that they believe the bay holds. Often times, they work with the brothers and sisters of Oyja on uncovering these secrets, believing that the goddess has something hidden within the waters of the bay that may be the key to making Shael the self-sustainable city it wishes it could be, free to govern itself as a beacon of what the rest of the Fade could be. Some in the temple believed that the appearance of the aasimar child was confirmation of this, and still wait for his reappearance on the shores.
While most people in the city either working in various trade related professions, or wholly devoted to the goddess of the city, there is also a large militia presence to keep guard from the wild creatures and monsters on the inland side of the city, as well as to help preserve order within the city itself. While there is a traditional law system, it is not uncommon for people to take justice into their own hands, and for the leaders of Shael to praise it, as long as it keeps the order of the city.
Since the city itself is build on sharp rocks the sea shaped for them, only a small part of the bay made up of inhabitable beach, there are often excursions inland to harvest food and hunt game during particularly bad weather, in which no boats can reach the bay easily. While the rest of the island does have other small pockets of people, villages that sustain themselves on the earth, it is rare that the people of Shael trade with them, almost as if to suggest they should join their city if they wished to have any of their riches.
