07.11.15 - 07.13.15 Took a weekend trip with a good friend to Stockholm. Second time visiting this city and I could finally see the Vasa ship. Got to see friends who studied abroad at uofi and visited his family farm too. This world is not that huge eventually :)

Wow Stockholm. Amazing. Okay, coming from Australia where the oldest standing piece of history is our national anthem, Stockholm was just nothing to compare to.  Firstly we arrived late on a Friday night. Yes the 5 hr bus ride wasn't exactly pleasant yet we made it none the less. We made it to our accommodation which was quite a funny experience. It was a old ocean liner that took the seas between Stockholm and Helsinki. They then decided to dock the ship near the old town (Galma Stan) and turn it into a hostel. It was almost like being on the titanic, yet on a really small version and it didn't sink. We hit the town immediately and Stockholm's charm took over me. I couldn't get enough of it. Even when it was snowing you could see so much character. We hit up a club and a bar and wow they swedes now how to dress and party. Amazing fashion sense (although I was extremely under dressed in jeans and tee).  The following day we took on Galma Stan. I felt like it was in a old movie that was set in like the 17th century. The buildings were tall and colourful. The streets were narrow and almost like a maze of some sort. The cafes were adorable and actually not too expensive. We took the the Stockholm Cathedral (Stockholms domkyrkoförsamling). And it was lavish, yet not like the Italian sense where they were showing off more simple but breath taking. It amazing to think this was the church of the Royals.  That night we took the the city central streets of Stockholm. It felt like a mini New York but Swedish style. For dinner we arrived at a little restaurant called 'Tradition' (Tulegatan 10, 113 53 Stockholm). Amazing simple traditional Swedish food, finally I got a taste of Swedish meat balls and mash potato and I was extremely happy (p.s what ever you do, don't got to Ikea. The quality is no where near as close as homemade meatballs.) Then a friend of ours from Stockholm took us around the city for a quick tour. The next day it was time to become royal. I don't think anyone understood how excited I was to explore the royal palace. In Australia we don't have royalty and it was a concept that amazed me and excited me. We took a tour of the treasury, the royal apartments and the museum. Sweden was one of the leading nations along with Denmark in the middle ages. Sweden separated from Denmark a very long time ago yet still acknowledge the danish history. Fun fact the royal family are actually not coronated. Meaning they aren't actually allowed to wear their crowns. It was a tradition that was set about 150 years ago. Nothing in the law stops them from being coronated yet its just tradition that has been upheld for sometime. We toured through parts of the palace that were extravagant and colourful. In the middle ages the palace was actually huge. Like 3 times the size yet there was a fire (caused by the chimney sweeps not doing their job). Only one person died because in the panic of the fire people were running through the castle collecting historical documents, one person found a book documenting the middle ages and threw it out the window to be saved, yet it hit someone in the head and they died. How unlucky. Stockholm trip was short but packed full of cute experiences. I will defiantly be visiting later this year in the summer to see what the summer life is like!

2/3/4/5- all taken near Gamla Stan, the old district of Sweden. Very pretty. This is also where the boats leave to go to Finland, Riga, Estonia etc..
