Trying to learn how to use a camera tool but it's tricky. Hopefully, I can start taking some good screenshots! š„° I sure wish we had a GPose-esque thing. One day maybe...
Figured I'd put some of my playthrough notes / headcannons / GaleFram / basically sitcom scripts out here for anyone interested. I also added several screenshots because the game is pretty.
See this post for the Pre-BG3 Tav backstory. (Minus 10 years in the Feywilds & 5 in Baldur's Gate which Wolfram tells the companions about as the game progresses. Please look forward to it! š)
Here's the Carrd (Better Organized)
This includes story stuff so don't read if you haven't played the game yet!
The Nautiloid
After ten years of serving his patron in the Feywild, Wolfram returned to the mortal realm. He gave up his powers after an argument with the archfey for deceiving him. He's been living in Baldur's Gate for the past five years. One day he wakes up aboard the Mindflayer ship with no recollection of how he got there.
Wolfram is trapped in the pod and calls out to his former patron in desperation. He apologizes for how he spoke to her at the end and says that her deception was his own fault for not being clever enough to ask more specific questions when creating the pact. He says he realized she was just trying to protect him a while ago but had let his pride get in the way of making amends.
The archfey tells him she'd never severed their connection because she knew he'd calm down eventually - she merely cut off the flow of power. She's glad he's come to his senses in time. Of course, she will help him escape but would like his aid with something as well.
Fey are being captured, tortured, and killed. Somewhere nearby. She wants him to find the cause and stop it. His patron will honor the initial pact and in exchange for her power, he will defend nature and fey kind from any threats. The 10-year term had been met so now he has more autonomy but she may have the occasional specific request. The worm has done something to him and it will take a bit of time for her to bestow all of his old powers to him. He accepts and thanks her. As the power surges into him she says she'll check on him when she can.
He blasts himself out of the pod, unable to stifle a giggle as he realizes how much he has missed his warlock abilities. He finds a longsword on the floor - which he uses to pry open the few remaining pods. Unfortunately, he doesn't find any survivors.
Wolfram goes into the next room and explores a bit, hoping to get his bearings on the alien ship. He curiously pokes at the creepy talking brain and then cringes, stabbing it repeatedly. š
He meets Lae'zel and thinks sheās abrasive, but chalks it up to being from a very closed culture. He lets the rudeness slide, happy to have help in the escape from someone who seems to understand these ships.
He insists on rescuing Shadowheart despite the Githās protests. He easily opens the pod with magic. Sheās grateful and he introduces himself, saying he was happy to help, while giving Laeāzel a pointed look. Shadowheart gets something out of the pod but he puts off his curiosity about the artifact for later.
They continue on to the helm and escape the ship. He wakes up on the beach the next day and quickly finds Shadowheart. They decide to search the area for a healer.
Introductions and Meet-cute
He and Shadowheart sneak up on the intellect devourers and push them into the fire of the wreckage. Wolfram cheers as the brains shrivel up in the flames and Shadowheart quirks a brow at this oddly cheerful man - fighting an amused smile.
They come across a very pale elf shouting for help. Wolfram offers to aid Astarion. He sees the boar but is too slow and the rogue gets a blade on him. The warlock calmly motions to Shadowheart to not attack and talks Astarion down, saying he won't hold it against him. They're all a bit anxious after the ordeal. Wolfram notices the teeth marks and red eyes but he has read books on vampires and even met a few so he second-guesses his instinct since Astarion is in the sun.
They come across some swirling energy against a rock. Wolfram hears someone shouting for help from inside. He focuses on stabilizing the arcane energy and then pulls a man out of the portal, falling backward onto the ground. Gale falls on top of him. They look each other in the eyes. The warlock smiles āHello there, handsome.ā The wizard is a bit flustered āMy apologies!ā Wolfram points at Astarion and smirks āItās alright. The last guy pulled a knife on me.ā Gale looks around to see the others. Shadowheart standing with arms crossed and brow furrowed, holding in a chuckle. Astarion gestures to the mages on the ground āWell darling, if Iād known *this* was an optionā¦ā Wolfram laughs. Gale gets to his feet, muttering while dusting himself off āThat was certainly not the softest of landingsā¦ā The warlock chuckles āI beg your pardon. Alas, all of my cushioning is gone after years of pulling random wizards from boulders.ā
Gale laughs then extends a hand āHello, Iām Gale of Waterdeep. Apologies, Iām usually better at this.ā Wolfram snorts and shakes his hand āBetter at introductions? I should hope so.ā Gale chuckles āAt magicā¦do I know you?ā Wolf shrugs āIām Wolfram of Sen - uh - of Baldurās Gate? Iām quite certain we havenāt met before. Iād remember you.ā Gale ponders āOH! I know! You were on the nautiloid as well!ā The warlock eyes the stone āNevermind the Nautiloid - howād you end up in that blasted thing?ā Gale starts explaining animatedly as if trying to entertain them. The rest of the partyās eyes glaze over but Wolfram just listens with an amused smile. āI donāt know what transpired exactly, but the ship broke into pieces and I suddenly found myself in freefall. As I was plummeting to certain death, I spied a glimmer quite near where I estimated my body to impact with less-than-savory propulsion. Recognizing this glimmer to be magical in nature, I reached out to it with a Weaving of words and found myself on the other side as it were.ā Wolfram smirks āAh, so in other words - a spell gone wrong. Iām glad we found you when we did.ā He gestures to Shadowheart āShadowheart and I escaped the Nautilid together and woke up on the beach. Not sure how we survived to be honest. There was another with us but we lost her after the crash.ā He gestures to Astarion āAnd he -ā Astarion scoffs āOh you can leave me out of the introductions.ā Wolfram smiles sweetly and points down the road. āWell then make yourself useful and go see if those goblins have anything good.ā Astarion rolls his eyes but begins looting the corpses as the others walk slowly in the other direction.
He and Gale talk about the tadpoles and what may be done about them. When asking about a cleric ("uncannily adroit with a knitting needle?") Wolfram smugly states āWell, I am quite good with a needle, but otherwise Iām more adept at hurting than healing.ā He points to Shadowheart āThis lass is our best bet. She's a very talented cleric.ā Shadowheart unamused āLass? Iād warrant I have a few years on you full humans⦠and this is beyond most healers' expertise.ā Wolfram winces āJust my way of speaking from living in - Aye, Iāll try to correct it.ā He nods respectfully.
Gale smiles hopefully āSo Wolfram, as you seem to be the leader of this party - How about we lend each other a helping hand once more and look for a healer together?ā The warlock nods āOh⦠I suppose I am? Weād be happy to have you join us.ā Shadowheart shrugs āThe more the merrier to deal with these little monsters in our heads.ā Astarion groans audibly while catching up to them with a pack of new weapons. Gale smiles āMost excellent! A parasite shared is a parasite halved⦠Or something to that effect.ā Wolfram snorts āThatās one way to look at it.ā Gale stops walking and faces him āOh! But before you think youāre about to embark on a journey with most ill-mannered a man: thank you for pulling me out of that stone. It was an act of foresighted kindness I assure you, for I have the feeling ample opportunities will present themselves for me to return the favor.ā Wolfram winks āOh I certainly hope so.ā Gale confused. "I assure you I am most practiced in the arcane arts and pledge to make myself useful in combat." The warlock gives an awkward thumbs up and giggles then starts walking along the path. He mutters to himself to get it together, damned fey magics.
They continue on. Shadowheart listens quietly as Wolfram and Gale talk. Astarion follows at a distance, sticking to the shadows. Gale asks āYouāre not versed in magic, are you?ā The warlock looks uneasy ā...Why do you ask?ā Gale eyes the large sword on his back āOh, I *do* apologize. I meant to ask: are you *studied* in magic? Which you are not." Wolfram smirks and nods āIndeed, I am not studied.ā Gale continues "If you meet any elder wizards, let me know. There is a matter Iād like to seek advice on from a master.ā Wolfram eyes him wearily āWell⦠Iām not close with any wizards exactly - but I am friends with a few powerful magic users. Those that live in this realm are in Baldurās Gate though⦠which I have a feeling is quite the journey from here. Wherever here is.ā Gale is confused but intrigued āIn *this realm*?ā The warlock smiles awkwardly and starts ranting about how pretty the trees are.
They find Laeāzel in a cage with two Tieflings arguing over what to do with her. Wolfram convinces the Tieflings he'll take care of Lae'zel and they should get to safety. After they leave he teasingly tells her to ask nicely to get her down. She responds with violence and he rolls his eyes and shoots her down. Shadowheart is upset and says they can't trust her. Gale says he's not met any Gith and would be happy to learn more about them. Astarion says this is all very dull but at the very least he must mention that she shouldn't be seen around these parts for a while because the next time she won't be so lucky. Laeāzel says she could defeat any of these āteeth-lingsā in combat. Wolfram says it's a shame she wants to explore with them because she's clearly the only one experienced enough to find an easily defensible campsite in case the Tieflings return. The others are impressed he was able to convince her to go find a patch of dirt to guard.
They take a short break. Wolfram goes off into the forest for a bit then returns, saying there is a place up ahead worth checking out.
The Ruins
They continue on to some ruins. Wolfram convinces the bandits at the entrance to leave. Gale Is impressed again "You certainly have a way with words." The warlock winks "I have been told I've got a good tongue." Gale scoffs āI believe the term is āsilver tongueāā Wolfram shrugs āYeah, that too.ā Astarion amused, mutters "Someone thinks highly of themselves." Shadowheart chuckles "Wolfram, your charms will serve us well, but please let us focus on the task at hand." Wolf nods to Shadowheart. "Aye, sorry. Iām a bit out of sorts still. Anyroad, words won't be enough once we're in here. My friend just said there are about 10 more of them in the ruins. We'll likely need to fight. Shadowheart frowns in confusion "Your friend?" Wolfram beams "Felicia. I sense that she's very trustworthy." He points to the boar who has been following them from a distance since the cliffs "Alright my dear, thank you for showing me. As you make your way back to your family please do stay clear of that wreckage." Gale eyes him with an amused grin. Felicia grunts and runs off before Astarion can shoot her. Wolfram glares āOy! Donāt kill her! She just helped us.ā Astarion pouts. Shadowheart asks "Oh? Are they a druid?" The warlock chuckles. "No, just a normal boar. I make a habit of talking to everyone I come across. You never know who has good information. Now - let's see if I can talk our way in here.ā
After Wolfram works his charms, the bandit guard opens the door to the unexpected guests. Gale manages to put the guard to sleep as he starts to shout for his friends. Wolfram gives an approving nod to the wizard, impressed. They position themselves in the shadows. Shadowheart and Astarion stand close to the next door. Gale stands back and Wolfram follows him. He eyes him with confusion "Surely this is too far back. Or do you plan to throw your sword?" Wolfram laughs "Ah, that's a bit of a last resort." He pauses then says, hesitantly. "I'm a warlock." Gale frowns in disappointment "Oh..." He recovers quickly and smiles "Well that's alright I suppose. You did get us in here. I don't mind doing the brunt of the spell work." Wolfram mocks gratitude "Oh well thank you so much! It's nice to have a proper magic user around." His hands crackle red with energy then he winks and hits the door with a powerful Eldritch blast, knocking it off the hinges and crushing two bandits under it.
After the bandits are defeated (and looted) they make their way to the dank crypt. Shadowheart notices the statue and says it's amusing that Jergal is here. Gale is curious about what information the scribes had that was worth killing over. As they're looting Astarion finds a book and unlocks it then sees the cover "Dead Gods? Sounds awfully boring." He sets it aside. Wolfram picks it up and thumbs through it, curious why some names are scratched out. He hands it to Gale who says maybe the book is why the scribes were killed. Whoever scratched out the names was clearly trying to hide something. Wolfram agrees. They look around the statue. Wolf notices a button and Astarion argues with him over who should get to push it. Gale inspects the device and the wall it's on and concludes that it likely opens a hidden door. Shadowheart says a secret room is likely trapped. Wolfram draws his blade and stands in front of the door while Astarion presses the button. The dead scribes rise and start towards them.
After defeating the undead they go into the room and meet Withers. Theyāre all a bit surprised with the talking skeleton, but itās not the strangest thing thatās happened to them recently so they roll with it. Withers asks Wolfram what the value of one mortal life is. The warlock takes a moment to think as the others debate among themselves. Astarion scoffs and says the only life he cares about is his own. Anyone who says otherwise is an idealistic fool. Shadowheart says a life's worth should be measured in their devotion. What they're willing to do to remove the suffering of others. Gale says every life is precious in its own way. Full of potentialā¦for good or ill - hopefully good.
Wolfram listens to them, smiling at Galeās answer. He turns back to Withers and says, hesitantly "I suppose that depends on the person. Everyone approaches their life goals differently and therefore have a unique effect on the world around them. Ideally, the intentions behind their actions are judged along with the result. Iām certainly counting on that." Withers is satisfied with the answer and then cryptically says he'll see them again at the appropriate time and place.
They leave the tomb a bit confused⦠but they find an amulet that lets them speak to the dead so that's cool.
They return to Lae'zel at camp (She set it up in an open area near a stream). Wolfram thanks her for picking such an easily defensible position. He knew he could count on her. She scoffs and says she needs no thanks - but hopes they found some food.
As Wolfram is stacking wood for a fire Withers shows up and says he'll be there at camp to aid them. They're all a bit weary but he seems powerful so better to have him as an ally.
The First Night at Camp
Party Banter
Shadowheart:Ā I'm a tad surprised you change into more comfortable garb at camp, Lae'zel. You strike me as the 'sleeps in her armor' type.
Lae'zel:Ā It would cause too much noise during my nighttimeā¦exertions. I do not wish to alert foes of our location.
Shadowheart: Nightime exertions⦠oh! I see. Well, considerate of you I suppose.
Wolfram: Who were you planning to uh⦠exert with?
Lae'zel:Ā Whoever I wish, Wolf-rum.
Astarion:Ā (giggles) I think you'll find a bit more effort is required to secure a partner around these partsā¦only a bit.
Gale:Ā I'm surprised you're allowed to choose a partner outside your own people.
Lae'zel:Ā We are to use and misuse every civilization in the stars in every way we know. I do not conquer by blade alone, Gale.
Gale:Ā I can't imagine mother Gith would approve. Doesn't she prefer us lesser species enslaved? Or eviscerated?
Lae'zel:Ā Tāchk! And with that comment - this topic no longer concerns you.
Wolfram:Ā (chuckles) What a shame, Gale. I hope you're not too heartbroken.
Lae'zel:Ā What is this talk of breaking hearts? The wizard is still useful - I merely do not wish to lay with him. There is no cause to fear for his life.
Gale:Ā Ah, well that's quite kind of you! Thank you for your mercyā¦on both counts.
The group is eating some fruit and dried meats theyād stolen from the bandits. (Astarion is just pretending to eat.) Laeāzel is sharpening her sword while chewing. Shadowheart asks Wolfram what heād been doing before all this. He throws an apple core into the forest and then answers āI was a cook in Baldurās Gate. Had my own place. Just a little 10-seater but I got by. A nice simple life. I'm eager to get back to it.ā Gale laughs. Wolfram looks at him with a confused expression. Gale is surprised āOh! You were serious? You don't seem the type.ā Shadowheart frowns āAfter seeing you fight I must admit thatās a shock to me as well.ā He shrugs āIām full of surprises.āĀ
Shadowheart nods "Well it's quite the coincidence. I need to return there as well." Astarion looks at them with interest but says nothing. Wolfram asks Shadowheart if she has business there or is a resident. She says it's a bit of both but would rather say no more. It's aā¦sensitive matter. Gale nods then picks a scroll out of his pack and starts reading. The warlock holds up his hands saying heās not the type to pry.Ā
Wolfram smiles "Perhaps once we have a cure we could travel there together?ā Shadowheart nods "I don't see why not, Wolfram. You've proven yourself to be very helpful so far." He chuckles "Well, I'll take that as a compliment." She smirks "Perhaps it was." Lae'zel scoffs "You Fae-run denizens and your subtle courtship rituals. It's unnecessarily complicated." Wolfram and Shadowheart object at the same time. Shadowheart scolds "People can simply be friendly. Though I doubt you know the meaning of the word." The warlock scoffs smugly "I assure you I'm anything but subtle in my 'courtship'." Astarion giggles "I'll say, Wolfram. Your flirtations are completely artless. It's embarrassing really." The elf glances at Gale who is still intensely focused on reading a Ray of Sickness scroll they found. Wolf follows Astarion's eyes to Gale then shrugs "Weāre in mortal peril, so why bother being subtle?"
Wolfram smiles awkwardly at Gale "How about you, handsome? What will you do after all of this is over." Gale keeps reading. Shadowheart and Astarion chuckle. Lae'zel scoffs and goes back to sharpening her blade. Wolf nudges Gale, who looks genuinely surprised as he sets down the scroll "Yes? Apologies, it's been some time since I learned that one. Quite an engaging read. I was miles away. How can I help you?" Wolfram smirks "I was asking what you plan to do once we've been healed." Gale's face falls briefly "Ohā¦" but a smile quickly returns "Well Wolfram, I suppose in a perfect world I'd return to Waterdeep. Back to my tower - surrounded by old tomes and having collected new tales to entertain my assistant." The warlock senses Gale is hiding something, but smiles "That sounds nice."
In time the sun sets and they all go to their tents. Wolfram goes to talk to Astarion. The elf complains about having to rough it outdoors. Wolf tries to reassure him and says itās not so bad. Astarion frowns āIt sounds like heās done it before.ā The warlock nods āQuite a bit. This is nothing compared to the time I managed to get some shuteye in a bog surrounded by will-o-wisp. ā¦Although the normally peaceful forest with a satyr party raging outside my tent was its brand of challenging.ā Astarion impressed āOh myā¦how did you manage to rest during *that*?ā Wolfram looks off dreamily āOh I didnāt, not a wink. I failed miserably.ā Astarion laughs āWell well! Our hero seems to have quite the past.ā Wolf laughs āIām no hero, but as for a past⦠I suspect we all do, right?ā Astarion becomes guarded, furrowing his brow and crossing his arms. Wolfram smiles reassuringly āAll Iām trying to say is that this place isnāt so bad. Youāll be fine.ā Astarion's frown lifts a bit āOh, alright. I suppose itās only until we get these worms out of our heads. Then I'll find a decent inn with silk sheets and a nice drink.ā The warlock nods āThat does sound more comfortable. Well, good evening to you.ā Wolfram walks off, muttering āWhat I wouldnāt give for a proper bath right now. Ilithids are nasty.āĀ
He talks with Shadowheart and asks how sheās feeling about the worm. She says thereās no point thinking about it. They need action. He nods and says thatās fair. Theyāll continue looking first thing in the morning. She tries to warn him to be wary of Gale. Wolfram looks over at the mage pacing by the fire and smiles warmly āAye, wizards may have a reputationā¦but who doesn't go a bit mad with power from time to time? Iāve a good feeling about this one.ā Shadowheart shakes her head in disapproval as he walks away and mumbles āLady guide me. Is there a reasonable one in this bunch?ā
Wolfram talks to Laeāzel. She says they need to find a creche. She thinks one of the teeth-lings has seen her people. He asks if they'll be safe among them. She says they will so long as she's with them.
He goes over to Gale. (āGo to Hellā scene.) The warlock smirks "Good evening to you too." Gale chuckles āYouāre a good sport.ā The wizard is contemplative about the day's events. Wolfram stands next to him and looks into the fire. āI understand. Weāve been through a lot in a short time... and it's a scary situation weāve found ourselves in. Iām trying to focus on other thoughts.ā Gale nods āI must say - you seem more serious than earlier.ā Wolf smiles awkwardly āAh⦠well aboard the ship I was⦠under the influence of something that improves my mood.ā Gale smirks āI wonāt judge. Iāll confess Iād enjoyed the occasional recreational potion in my youth.ā Wolfram laughs āI wasnāt high, Gale! Well, not under the effect of a potion anyroad.ā Gale grins āWell, Iām pleased to see you taking things seriously now. Perhaps fewer attempts at humor? I have that domain covered.ā The warlock chuckles āYou certainly do, but Iāll have you know going forward I do tend to laugh in the face of danger. Rest assured I still take every fight seriously.ā
Gale smiles, a bit more relaxed. Wolfram jokes around but is ultimately comforting. He offers Gale a drink to calm his nerves. Gale takes a sip of the liquor āI suppose this is one way to handle the situation we've found ourselves in. Alas, I have no books. A good read and a glass of wine do wonders for my constitution.ā The warlock roots around in his bag and hands him two books heād found in the ruins. āI guess I can share.ā Gale is surprised āYou looted them?ā Wolfram shrugs āOf course. Some dusty tomes in an ancient ruin. How could I resist?ā Gale smiles warmly āI seem to have judged you incorrectly. A fair few times today.ā Wolf shrugs āIn all honesty Iād expected it. Youāre not the first wizard Iāve known.ā He chuckles āA recent customer was quite possibly the most arrogant person I'd ever met. I suspect I won't need to cut you off and throw you out onto the street too?ā Gale scoffs confidently āIād like to see you try. Besides, I'm sure you're aware we're not all the same. I, for instance, am exceptionally humble despite my many impressive accomplishments.ā Wolfram chuckles at Gale's smug expression then winks "I'm just teasing you. How about this, handsome - you keep an open mind and Iāll do the same?ā Gale looks confused, more by the nickname than the proposition. He recovers and smiles apologetically āThat sounds like a most excellent idea.ā
After making the rounds, Wolfram returns to his tent. Despite his exhaustion, he can't sleep. He tries to think of home... his cozy apartment, the little bar and its odd clientele, the street urchins that may be going hungry without him to dole out scraps at closing time, the contracts he'll miss out on in his absence - likely to go to some bloodthirsty Guild member without care for casualties... Unfortunately, the only image that seems to stick is one of tentacles breaking through his skull. How will he lead this group of misfits amid his rising panic? How will he keep up his calm facade? A restless night of tossing and turning won't help, but that seems to be what's in store for him.

Here's the Carrd page - looks nicer.
The Tieflings
The next day, the group discovers that Wolfram is an unnaturally heavy sleeper. Lae'zel shaking him and shouting that they're being attacked finally does the trick. He apologizes, saying he'd gotten used to the safe city life. Gale seems curious and asks why a cook would be used to anything else. Wolfram laughs it off and tries to change the subject. Astarion says not to worry. He doesn't mind waking him up. He should sleep as long and as deeply as he can. Wolfram puts on a fake smile and thanks him, making a mental note to get back in fighting form quickly. Despite that, they manage to get an early start on finding a healer.
The party comes across a group of goblins attacking some humans as they try to enter a stronghold. A young man with a rapier leaps down from the wall and into the pack of goblins. Wolfram is interested to see him using warlock spells and thinks this hero may be a good ally. The older warlock gestures to the group that he's going to help and starts running toward the goblins, throwing eldritch blasts to push the stragglers away so the other warlock isn't overwhelmed. The rest of the party groans but follows him - except Gale, who is happy to help those in need and runs up the hill to better aim his firebolts.
Once the fight is over, Astarion immediately starts looting the corpses as Wyll introduces himself to the group. He refers to himself as the āBlade of Frontiersā and thanks them for their aid. Wolfram says he'd heard of him in Baldurās Gate, but is glad to put a face to the name.
The tadpole connects them. He sees Wyll pursuing his mark through Avernus. Wolfram is impressed with the younger warlock's skills and asks if he'd like to join their party in exchange for help with the devil. Wyll smiles and says he'd be happy to join. His priority must be killing Karlach, but afterward, he'll help search for a healer outside the grove.
They head inside the gate where they see an argument about to escalate. Wolfram tries to convince Aradin and Zevlor to cool off. They just fought goblins, they don't need to fight each other. The older man nods and relaxes his stance. Aradin isnāt backing down and looks like heās about to hit him. Wolfram smiles at Aradin, putting a comforting hand on the smaller humanās shoulder, and calmly says itās never easy to lose friends. He should take some time to collect himself after the loss. Aradin is shocked at the patient reaction and walks off with a confused look. Wolfram can tell by the looks of his companions that they expected him to hit the young man. The warlock shrugs at them, saying that was nothing compared to his average night in the Gate.
Wolfram talks to Zevlor. He asks what the little gang of arseholes was up to. Zevlor canāt help but smirk at the newcomerās ability to bluff. He thanks them all for their aid and explains the tense situation in the grove. Wolfram promises to talk to Kagha about letting the Tieflings stay. Astarion, Laeāzel, and Shadowheart arenāt pleased. Gale tells them theyāre already in the area so why not try? Itās always good to make allies where they can. The wizard smiles at Wolfram and nods with approval. Astarion and Shadowheart are alright with it so long as they get out before more goblins arrive. Laeāzel says she doesnāt really care so long as she gets the location of the creche. Wyll eyes the group wearily, stating they should help because itās simply the right thing to do. Wolfram nudges the other warlock and mutters that he needs to fill him in on some of the group dynamics later. Wyll chuckles and says he can see theyāll get on fine.
As the group continues into the grove, Wolfram canāt help but overhear a loud conversation between some tiefling siblings. He impulsively asks them what's going on. Astarion groans audibly and Laeāzel rolls her eyes. How did the most distractable warlock on FaerĆ»n become their leader? The group walks off to watch the tiefling children train, except Wolfram and Gale. Lia explains that she wants to stay and help fight while Rolan wants to leave to start his apprenticeship. Wolfram agrees with Lia - the strong have a duty to protect the weak. Gale is curious and asks which wizard heāll be training under. Rolan starts bragging about Loroakkan. Wolfram snorts and casually puts a hand over his face to stop himself from laughing. Gale asks if itās the wizard living in Ramazithās Tower. He says he heard Loroakkan is a ābit of a cadā. Rolan dismisses the claim. Gale says he'd be grateful for an introduction then. Wolfram gives Gale a meaningful look and shakes his head no.
Rolan and his siblings walk away. Gale smirks āWell, now you have my curiosity. Would you care to share the source of your amusement?ā Wolfram chuckles āIām pretty sure Loroakkan was the wizard I threw out of my place a few nights ago. He mentioned Ramazith tower and the lad was wearing very expensive-looking robes. Not the usual clientele.ā Gale smiles curiously āOh? I do love a bit of gossip about fellow academics. What did he do?ā The warlock grins āIn addition to talking down to everyone? After his business was concluded with some mercenary types he overindulged and then propositioned a few of the lasses from the brothel next door. They were just trying to have a meal after their shift. Theyād politely declined and he kept pestering them. The man has no respect for the working class and I canāt abide that sort of behavior.ā Wolfram chuckles āI may have been a bit more forceful than necessary. Looked like he was about to attack me until he saw some Fists standing outside.ā Gale tuts disapprovingly āItās a shame the rumors are true. Still, he may be a talented mage even if heās an insufferable person and unfortunately, my options so far from Waterdeep are slim. But thank you for the information, Wolfram. At least Iāll know what to expect.ā The warlock shrugs but decides to not pry into the mageās business. They catch up with the group as Wyll is introducing them to some of the tieflings.
Wolfram does his best to inspire the kids, but heās sad they need to fear for their lives so young. He says heās going to kill all the goblins himself so they wonāt need to be afraid. Wyll smiles and claps him on the back. Gale gives him an odd look, as if heās not sure he was being truthful or telling them what he thought they wanted to hear. The others glare daggers at him so itās clear heāll need to win them over.
Wolf gives Guex some advice too, but he canāt resist the urge to tease him a bit for calling out his moves.
Wolfram then notices the oxen and has a quick word with them as the group stares at him in disbelief at his lack of focus. The warlock returns with a pocket of gold and trinkets to sell. He says itās always a good idea to talk to animals and heās not going to stop so theyād better get used to it. Astarion is convinced by the gold. Then Wolfram mentions they need to steer clear, pun intended. There's something strange about one of them. He can't tell if it's a druid or some other kind of shapeshifter but it's not a proper animal and it isĀ veryĀ grouchy.
Astarion yawns and starts to leave, āI trust you lot can manage without me? All that fighting has tired me out. Iāll be at camp.ā Wyll smiles and picks up his bags āGreat. You can show me where to set up my tent.ā Astarion glances at the monster hunter wearily then gives his best smile āOf course darling - you can do that while I go hunting⦠for a um deer or boar or what have you.ā Wyll eyes the pale man with red eyes and quirks an eyebrow in suspicion āSo long as itās boars youāre killing I wish you luck.ā The two leave.
They find Zorru and Laeāzel asks him about the creche by terrifying the tiefling into submission. Wolfram angrily tells her to go back to camp or remain quiet. Sheās threatening people needlessly. He'll get her the information. Sheās annoyed but remains quiet, crossing her arms and glaring at him. The warlock apologizes to Zorru, who immediately gives them the location of the patrol. Wolfram thanks him as the scared man runs off.
After Zorru leaves, Laeāzel angrily tells Wolfram the last time a subordinate talked to her that way she ate tongue stew for dinner. The warlock canāt help but laugh in her face before explaining he only takes orders from one person and sheās not going to react well if he finds a new master. Especially one who lacks diplomacy and has no regard for the well-being of others. Heāll treat Laeāzel with the respect he treats every comrade but sheās not entitled to anything more. Shadowheart and Gale grin, but keep quiet. The gith glares, makes a clicking noise and huffs off back toward camp. Wolfram asks Shadowheart if she can go with her and keep an eye on her so she doesn't return to traumatize more tieflings. The cleric begrudgingly agrees but tells him to focus and find a healer.
A Spark
Wolfram and Gale continue exploring the grove. The wizard comments on the druidic magic and general sense of unease. The warlock is impressed he can sense the ambient magic so easily. He asks if Gale knows much about druid magic. The wizard says he doesnāt practice it himself but has read quite a bit on the subject if heās interested in hearing about it. Wolfram enthusiastically says heād be happy to learn what Gale knows. They walk around atop the wall - Wolf assessing the defensive capabilities of the grove as the wizard excitedly nerds out about magic, surprised that the warlock doesnāt grow tired of hearing him talk.
They come to an area with vendors and meet Auntie Ethel. Wolfram is immediately becomes very submissive and polite to her. Afterward, Gale curiously asks why his demeanor changed so much. The warlock glances back to make sure sheās not watching āThat was most definitely a fey. What kind I know not⦠but she may be of use so I wanted to be on her good side. They can be a bit fickle, especially if offended.ā Gale looks surprised āOh! How could you tell?ā Wolfram laughs, āExperience⦠and I may have had help. Let's keep looking around though. Iād like a cure option thatās less risky than a githyanki creche or unknown fey.ā
They find a goblin, Sazza, in a cage being threatened by a tiefling woman with a crossbow. Wolfram steps in front of the prisoner and talks Arka out of killing her like that - it won't bring anyone back or make her feel better. Gale watches the exchange with admiration.
Afterward, the wizard says the standoff reminds him of a similar one at a tavern in Waterdeep. He very enthusiastically and with great showmanship, as if trying to impress Wolfram, recounts a confrontation at The Yawning Portal in which he calmed folks down by offering a round of drinks.
Wolfram grins āI wouldn't have thought you the tavern-dwelling type. Not with all your talk of towers and cats.ā Gale scoffs āI contain multitudes. Besides, a tavern is an excellent place to overhear the most interesting conversations - thus turning a pint with colleagues into an educational endeavor.ā The warlock grins āThat's actually what I like about them as well! Also, an easy way to find the next ruin to explore or monster to slay.ā Gale smirks āSoĀ that'sĀ why you run a bar.ā Wolfram replies smugly āNo one ever thinks the guy pouring their drinks is listening.ā He smiles awkwardly āI do enjoy the work itself - just wish it paid better. I'm used to a comfortable standard of living after all.ā Gale chuckles. āAlright hero, you certainly make more sense to me with this new information.ā
The warlock flushes a bit at the title but responds humbly āI think the āheroā designation may be reserved for our āBlade of Frontiersā.ā He smirks ā...Although, while I didn't give myself a title - I must confess I once had a similar lifestyle. Not in the Gate but⦠well anyroad, I need some new armor or I won't be saving anyone. Alright handsome, we should - ā Gale scoffs āSo it appears you can give others cheeky nicknames but won't allow them for yourself?ā Wolfram is confused āCheeky? Like a joke? When did I give anyone a -ā Gale stares at him pointedly with a smirk āDeny all you want, I'm merely pointing out the hypocrisy.ā Wolf is completely lost āHuh?ā. Gale shrugs āIt's alright I suppose. I can take a bit of teasing. I have a delightful sense of humor after all. - Ah, this fellow seems to be a blacksmith.ā Wolfram scratches his head in confusion as they walk towards the stall.
They chat with Dammon. He says heās a smith but complains about not having the proper equipment. Wolfram says his craftsmanship is very good anyroad. He'd love to see what the tiefling can do with a full forge. The warlock asks if he has any light armor that would fit him. Dammon looks him over then rummages through a trunk, producing a thick padded jacket āI made this for a half-orc assassin before we fled. With some adjustments, it should be passable. Unfortunately, that's the best I can do, but I'll give you a discount for the shorter length.ā Gale finds a place to stand out of the way, pretending to read a scroll while Wolfram removes his worn jacket, riddled with holes and slashes, revealing a sleeveless undershirt and heavily scarred arms. As the warlock tries on the new armor Dammon bawks at his scars āHellsā¦are you a soldier or something?ā Wolfram laughs āLet's go with āsomethingā. Iād tell you you should see the other guys but they're dead or on another plane of existence.ā Dammon chuckles and takes out a heavy needle and thread āWell, I suppose youāll have some more goblins to bloody soon enough with the way things are going.ā
As Dammon works, Wolfram glances over at Gale āI see you bought a new spell scroll to memorize.ā The wizard nods behind the parchment he's staring at intently. āWell of course. Our um⦠condition. It necessitates I re-memorize some of the basics.ā Wolfram smirks āYou're very impressive, you know?ā Gale scoffs, head peeking out from behind the side of the scroll āI am aware, but thank you. Although I hardly think learning a 2nd level spell should be considered as such.ā The warlock grins smugly āI meant because you're reading it upside down. Quite the skill.ā Gale flushes and retreats back behind the scroll āY-yes, well it's useful to be able to read from any direction.ā Wolfram represses a laugh. He'd swear something flashed behind the scroll, but it must have been a trick of the lightā¦
After Dammon adjusts his new coat, Wolfram smiles āThank you! I appreciate your time. If we all manage to make it to Baldur's Gate I'll send lots of new clients your way.ā Dammon pockets the gold and then shakes the warlockās hand āWith those goblins on the road and the druids growing less hospitable daily, I'm not sure how likely that will be⦠but I wish you both well.ā Wolfram looks around, making sure there are no others in earshot āWe have a more pressing matter, but after that, Iād like to help you all with the goblins. Iāve just got some friends that will need convincing.ā Gale smiles, pleasantly surprised that he was being truthful to the children earlier āIs that so, Wolfram? I couldn't agree more.ā Dammon smiles āTruly?! Well, we certainly need it. Thank you.ā
Reality Sets In
The mages walk around a bit more, talking to the locals and trading, but the more tieflings Wolfram sees the more he thinks about how dangerous it is for them to be around regular people with ceremorphosis just days away. The warlock decides he needs a moment to collect himself and uses the excuse that he's going to scout ahead while Gale finishes up there. The wizard invites himself along anyway. š¤£
After they leave the grove, Wolfram canāt help but admit to just how much having a worm in his skull is freaking him out. Gale asks why he was trying to hide it. The wizard had certainly voiced his own concerns the night before. The warlock explains he's trying to put on a brave face for the group because they need a leader. Despite his current profession, this sort of thing comes naturally to him. For some reason, people tend toĀ assumeĀ heās in charge wherever he goes so he does have⦠prior experience. Not that he's the only qualified one among them, but he thinks the group needs someone who can give orders that don't involve killing or torturing everyone they meet. Gale says heās pleased with his diplomatic nature and grateful that heās taken it upon himself to keep the more⦠problematic personalities under control.
The wizard says he thinks it would be good to take their minds off the tadpole for a while. He says he hardly knows anything about Wolfram. What are his hobbies and interests? The warlock is a bit weary of opening up but pleased that Gale wants to help him calm down. He says he's grateful for any sort of ādistractionā the wizard can provide, but Gale doesn't pick up on the flirtation so he moves on. Wolfram says he was born in Baldur's Gate but grew up in a small village and only moved back about five years ago. As for hobbies⦠he likes to come up with new recipes. Gale does too and says maybe they can make dinner for the camp together. What else does he like to do? The warlock says he enjoys practicing with different types of weapons. Especially longswords and rapiers. Gale says his sword skills are very impressive for a caster. Wolfram beams and thanks him. Says he learned the blade first. Otherwise, as far as interests, he doesnāt really have much free time to pursue anything. He doesn't have as many close friends as he used to so with what little free time he has he likes going on walks around town. He chats up folks who seem friendly. While he likes people, he enjoys talking to animals the most. Baldurian cats are especially entertaining. Gale is excited to hear that and mentions he misses his own feline companion. He hopes sheās not too worried about him.
Gale asks if Wolfram has any intellectual pursuits - other than reading books that he finds in old ruins. The warlock explains that his parents didn't value formal education very much and that he struggled to learn despite his desire to. They eventually gave up on him and had him work at their inn instead of bothering with the schoolhouse. Gale frowns at this and suggests he may have simply needed a better teacher. Heād seen plenty of apprentices who simply needed a bit of extra attention in the classroom to thrive. Wolfram frowns in contemplation then says he's probably right. He can read the common tongue but had to teach himself. It was difficult but worth the effort. He'd been content with his simple life in the Gate but did enjoy reading about other places.
Then Wolfram, having a sudden unexpected desire to impress the wizard, mentions that he can speak Sylvan fluently. He can read a fair bit of it as well. Gale is pleasantly surprised, saying heād only met a few pixies himself but their language is beautiful. He knows a small amount. Enough to ask for directions at least - should he ever have the fortune to venture into the Feywilds. The warlock smirks, saying he'd be happy to teach him more. Gale beams excitedly.
Wolfram thinks to himself that he's not quite ready for anyone to know too much about his life before returning to the Gate, but in time he may tell Gale. Heās finding the wizard to be surprisingly easy to talk to.
Gale casually asks if he's got anyone waiting for him back at the Gate. Wolfram says his family is long gone but he had a few people that may be worried about him.
The warlock ponders āWell, I had some friends I took the odd job from. The bar had its regulars of course. I suppose theyāve been missing their grog the past few days. Then there was a madam who checked in on me quite often.ā Gale looks a bit disappointed āOh. I see.ā Wolfram chuckles, pleased with the wizardās reaction āBecause I saved her daughter from an ogre. She liked to let me know when the talented bard would be playing in their lobby.ā Gale lightly blushes, embarrassed at his assumption āAh. Itās a great thing to support the arts. I'm sure she appreciated your patronage as well. It sounds as if you had an impact on quite a few lives. While you claim no close connections - Iād warrant your absence is felt.ā The warlock smirks, asking coyly āThank you. I hope youāre right. And you? Surely you donāt have a whole arcane tower to yourself.ā Gale frowns, nodding sadly, āYes, my assistant Tara has likely worried herself sick. I hate disappointing her and seem to do it often of late.ā Wolfram smiles, happy to detect no hint of romance surrounding this āTaraā. He reassuringly pats the wizardās shoulder āI promise, despite my own brief moment of doubt - we will do everything we can to survive this. Youāll get back to her soon. Worm-free!ā Gale nods contemplatively "Survive the wormsā¦yes." The wizard quickly puts back on a cheery countenance āI must say your hopeful attitude is a joy to be around. Itās almost enough to convince me everything will be alright. Funny, that.ā Wolfram chuckles. Gale gives a genuine smile āAnd with that⦠in the future, I do hope you feel comfortable speaking with me if the stress of leadership threatens to overwhelm you. I may not have much experience with that particular burden, but at the very least I am confident in my ability to tell a joke or distract you with a story.ā The warlock smiles warmly āThanks handsome, I appreciate it. Truly.ā Gale cringes at the nickname but lets it go.
@xiv-wolfram's side-blog for Baldur's Gate 3. Wolfram Everhearth is my FFXIV character reimagined for Faerƻn. He's a human archfey warlock and is shipped with Gale of Waterdeep.
I don't plan to do a big epic like I do with FFXIV, but I am working on a bio/summary/goofy snippets and if the mood takes me I may try my hand at fanfiction. š¤
