Not with a bang, but not with a whimper either. It turned out the end didn’t come for Spike at all.

He had said he wasn’t going to meet Vicious to die and that hadn’t been a total lie, but Spike had still expected to find an answer, or finality in some form. Only it hadn’t come. After everything he had gone through, it hadn’t come. He thought he had climbed all the way to the top of the staircase, but the only thing waiting for him was a false step that he’d gone tumbling through, all the way down to the bottom again, like it was a great cosmic game of snakes and ladders.

Do you love Spike/Faye? Are you going apeshit most of the time over them? Do you want a new story that’s well-written and also a complete work that is well-rounded, paced well, and makes you have to step away from your computer because your screaming and crying at how beautiful it is?

Then you should read this. Seriously. @galateas is a genius and I couldn’t not share the beauty that this is. I want more and at the same time it’s the perfect length. But like also galateas fam if you end up writing more you know I mean brO

SPACE OPERA god i love space opera (well i love “New Space Opera” which is basically space opera but with hard science fiction). it’s the beauty of high fantasy elements but in SPACE and with ALIENS and SPACE SHIPS and TRANSDIMENSIONAL SPACE TRAVEL.

i’d recommend the Culture Series by Iain M. Banks. The series is set in a post-scarcity multi-species society ruled by SENTIENT SPACE SHIPS THE SIZE OF MOONS who BICKER WITH ONE ANOTHER through EMAIL TRANSCRIPTIONS. I’ve only read one book (due to the extreme lack of affordability and availability), Excession, but it was AWESOME and focused on these space ships as they tried to make sense of a mysterious and unique (and therefore of infinite value in a post-scarce society) object that made a bridge between the two parallel dimensional spaces that they have access to. It also involves REALISTIC SPACE BATTLES in SPACE. seriously just read those links because wow.

I’d also recommend the Night’s Dawn trilogy by Peter Hamilton. Those books are gigantic. and also they have SPACE ZOMBIES caused by SPACE GHOSTS possessing SPACE HUMANS, and these space ghosts were accidentally released by SPACE GHOST ALIENS accidentally opening SPACE HELL. The society in Night’s Dawn is split up between two factions: the Edenists who just love biotechnology, going as far as creating LIVING SPACE STATIONS WHO ARE ALIVE, and Adamists who prefer nanotechnology instead because of RELIGION and shit. again due to being not-cheap and not-widely-available, i’ve only read the first half of the first book, Reality Dysfunction, but holy hell was it good.

Known Space, by Larry Niven, is also a thing i’d recommend! I’ve only read short stories set in that universe (because seriously this whole non-affordable thing is such a drag) but there are SPACE BATTLE CATS and A GIGANTIC RING STRUCTURE ROTATING AROUND A STAR. It spans future history from slow interplanetary colonization  of the solar system to FTL TRAVEL in a sixty lightyear-wide bubble filled with aliens and also apparently Homo Habilis is an ALIEN with a second evolution called PAK PROTECTORS.

there’s also this novel by Gregory Benford called Beyond Infinity which i owned but lent to someone in high school i can’t remember and therefore can’t ask for back. it’s set in the really far future where humans have started to split into different species and are technologically advenced enough to have REARRANGED THE PLANETS to a more AESTHETICALLY PLEASING ARRANGEMENT. also there is a literal GIGANTIC CARTWHEEL that SCOOPS THINGS UP from Earth and flings it at JUPITER. The story starts when aliens wipte almost all the original humans, leaving our main protagonist alone except for a HYPERINTELLIGENT SPACE RACCOON and seeking ADVENTURE and REVENGE. at one point they end up inside a TOROIDAL UNIVERSE somehow.

oh god i think i want to recommend more but this is getting a bit long.

I was putting the tags than i remembered Schild’s Ladder by Greg Egan with it’s sarumpaet rules and bubble universe eating up our own at the speed of light

and also the Rama quadrilogy by Arthur C. Clarke and Gentry Lee with its mysterious three space ships and god i need to stop.
