My love, my flower
Is she that good?
Am I that good?

Concentric Shapes: Octagon
Images 1 to 3 are of a kinetic piece made with concentric octagons in the same fashion as the Degrees of Freedom piece which was made with concentric squares. This one however does not clash since an octagon is essentially a square with the corners cut off and it was the corners that were the issue, so I suppose this one should be called More Degrees of Freedom.
Images 4 and 5 are of a piece where there is no articulation but rearrangement (translation and rotation in the x,y and z axes) of concentric pieces.
Both of these small plywood sculptures can be stood on the edge of the largest central piece and so are part of the Balance series.
It is really interesting the structural complexity that can be produced in a piece made from very simple similar parts by the use of simple rules, so here we have an example of Rule Based Art. or as described by Galanter ‘Generative Art’ which according to him need not be computer based.
That said, if you use Murray Gell-Mann’s definition of complexity then most generative art is actually simple.
