Balancing the Scales [;;Mun&Muse]
[WARNING: This is the product of me be trying not to overthink what I write, and let my ideas freeflow. While I made an effort not to be vulgar, it may be messy in other ways. Read at your own peril.]
So I'll admit. I have somewhat of a fancrush on Dick Grayson. Platonic, despite the NightTights. At first, it was just because he wasn't Batman; he wasn't being worshipped by the masses. Pretentious? Sure, I won't deny that. In fact, I've gone out of my way to find things that weren't "mainstream" to enjoy. Sometimes it paid off. Other times, it was a waste of time.
I start off with an explanation to "Why Nightwing?" because of a short conversation I had at Toronto's FanExpo a couple of weeks ago. (T-Dot RepreSENT!) After asking why, the guy (probably not too well acquainted with the character) followed up with "He's just a sidekick, isn't he? What's so interesting about Nightwing?" I wanted to jaw at him, and spit up an encyclopedia's worth of lore on the former Boy Wonder. Reason I didn't was because I realized that before getting into his books, I, too, saw Nightwing only as an afterthought to the Dark Knight.
But he's a cool guy. Reading stuff exclusively on him, and panning away from his Dynamic Duo-ship with the Dark Knight, introduced me to a whole new character. While he fights crime in gigs not fit for everyday life like Batman, he's more than just the guy's Yes Man or accessory. If you so feel inclined to, you should take a look at his entry on the batman.wikia or whatever. You might be interested in what you find. I won't do any of the work for you, but it's been said that while Batman may be one of DCs flagships, Nightwing is one of its pillars, because of how deep rooted he is in not just his own story, but the stories of many other characters, the entirety of the Teen Titans being one of them.
Upon coming here, I employ the whole "taking the road less traveled by" one more step. What I aim to do with Dickie here is to take a departure from how he is in the books. What better vehicle than our group's own setting and scenario. The first thing I asked myself was, "What would Dick be like without Batman?" The answer I get is, just some jaded street punk with some athletics under his belt. Hell, with this question, I bet someone could recycle Dick Grayson in a million ways.
Now, I can't really claim to be a street punk. I still live with blood relations in my life, never been involved with crime, and I'm not much of a circus act. So personal experience is out as a muse. And while I HAVE gone to high school, the joint was small, and an all boys school. So any knowledge that I have of things like social drama as a teenager is from secondary sources.
The only thing left that I have that could possibly break the wall between mun and muse is working with personality. Mind you (whoever actually bothered reading this swill), personality isn't insignificant in roleplay. In fact, personality is what makes roleplay what it is. Without it, it just ends up reading like a script to some average porno. (If you haven't bothered to watch/come across said scenes, you aren't missing much.) I won't go too much into how I'm gonna be acting as Dick, or otherwise I lose incentive for anyone to play with me.
While original characters that I've typed as have been varying degrees of reflection of myself, I feel that if there's a character that I'm adapting, then the space between mun and muse is a sacred place that must not be touched. Though like everyone else, I do sin (Bare with me here. I was raised Roman Catholic.), so my own personality may sometimes dip into my character's.
However, keeping mun and muse separate is not just a caution that I have. I also believe that the charm in adapting a character of someone else's design lies in writing as just that: someone else. The very reason why I chose to roleplay Dick Grayson, the reason why I was so caught up in his comics, the reason I'm a fan, is because despite only ever existing on a page or a screen, he is his own man. And what I aim to do is simply act. Not be, as tempting as it is.
But that's just me.
Challenge completed...I guess.

Challenge #1 || IC || After the Outage
Edward was laying on his bed in his room. He was staring at the wall, thinking.
What is with this school? It seems everybody has a mystery...
He had arrived to Gotham Academy somewhat late into the term and everybody was on edge. Some people were nervous and jittery while others were defensive and aggressive. So when he heard about the recent power outage and random men masquerading around the school, he was more than glad he was late.
In fact, the current state of the school was more of a pleasant surprise than a shock to him. He saw it as opportunity. Emotion was the best way to get something you want from somebody else. Molding them like clay would be a cakewalk. At least that's what he thought.
These people aren't like sand. More like glass or metal. The only way I can get what I need from them will require some heat...
He had been dwelling on that thought for some time now. But his mind wandered. He knew that the perfect furnace to heat the other classmates up was already in the building. Lex Luthor. He couldn't talk to anybody without his name coming up and everybody seemed to think he was behind the outage. The only problem was he knew next to nothing about Lex. Everybody knew who he was and what he did, but nobody really knew who he was or what he did. The school was a mystery to Edward, but Lex was the first puzzle piece.
Question everything.
Rose Wilson had told him that early on and he kept the words close to him. Everything was a puzzle from then on. There weren't problems or possibilities, only puzzles and answers. He remembered one of his first interactions with a girl named Emmy. She wanted to bug Lex's office and he had agreed to help, but now more than ever did that plan seem relevant. He had slid into the shadows recently, but it was apparent that being a fly on the wall wasn't going to get him the info he needed. Nor was getting info form other students. No. He was going to need to stir the pot.
But who could help cause the most trouble?
