Jane and Loki hate each other.

They always have. They always will. 

Jane thinks Loki is a pretentious pretty boy with a superiority complex the size of Texas. Loki thinks Jane is a mousy nuisance with delusions of grandeur.

Annoyingly, most of their friends are of the opinion that Loki and Jane’s hatred is less of the ‘if I found you dying I’d throw popcorn in your mouth instead of calling an ambulance’ variety and more of the ‘I am two steps away from ripping your clothes off and riding you so hard it breaks the mattress’ variety.

Which is complete and utter bullshit as they are both always quick to point out.

‘I don’t know what I could’ve said to make you believe I want anything to do with that simpering little peon,’ Loki says dismissively when Thor happens to bring Jane up in conversation.

Thor grins knowingly as if there’s anything in his head other than ‘fight’ and ‘food’. “Forgive me brother, you just always seem to go out of your way to speak of Jane. When she’s around, you always pay attention to her first. You’ve read everything she’s published cover to cover.”

“I’m speaking of her because she’s wrong, I pay attention to her so I can tell her she’s wrong, and I read her papers so I’ll know all the ways in which she is wrong. It’s that simple.”

“Is it?” Thor teases, “because you know, it could be you who is wrong.”

Then Loki steals the rest of Thor’s French fries and leaves. This idiot deserves to go hungry.

Meanwhile across town:

“I can’t stand that asshole,” Jane complains to Darcy over drinks. “He thinks he’s so smart but he doesn’t have a goddamn clue what he’s talking about.”

“You sure?” Darcy asks. “He could be right about some things. And even if he’s not, I know you love that sweet ass of his. Or those piercing blue eyes, or that little growl in his voice when he talks-”

“I don’t love any of those things, thank you,” Jane insists. “I don’t love anything about him.”

“Then why are you always going on about him if you don’t like him?”

“Because I HATE him!” Jane shouts loud enough to draw the attention of several patrons. “How in God’s name do you interpret ‘I hope he chokes on his fancy caviar’ as anything other than hate? That’s the exact opposite of love!”

“Wrong. The opposite of love is indifference, and you are in no way indifferent to Loki.” Darcy grins like a cat with a mouse’s tail caught in its claws. “Also I said ‘like’ not ‘love.’”

Jane ‘accidentally’ knocks over Darcy’s tequila. 

So it goes for poor Jane and Loki. No matter what they do, everyone around them thinks they are soulmates. Betting pools are set up for when they’ll confess, who will break down first and how it’ll happen. Complete strangers catch them arguing and smile. Young love at its finest, they say.

It soon becomes clear they have to do something. They have to find some way to convince the world they are NOT in love. Because they’re not. They absolutely, positively, one hundred and ten percent are not and will never be in love with each other…
