Hi, for the requests can you please do Nalu with #56, are you trying to flirt with me? and #57 is that my shirt?
Here, friend! â„(prompt from here)
Lucy tosses her pen off the table with a frustrated huff. Itâs a Monday morning, bright and cheerful, the sun shining through her bedroom window and a light breeze lifting the curtains. Perfect weather for writing, really, not too hot and not too cold, and yet she canât get anything from her brain onto the paper. Itâs there, she can see the picture in her mind and the words that need to attach to it, but actually writing them down leads to nonsensical doodles on her paper rather than actual words.Â
Well, truthfully, it is a word. A name. But doodling Natsuâs name on her paper is even worse than some random stick-figure drawing. She certainly doesnât need him stuck in her head anymore than he already is. And yet, here she is, her chair leaning back and her paper abandoned, thinking of him yet again. Itâs that mission, she thinks, growling to herself as she stands up, crossing the room to her closet. His shirt hangs on the handle, waiting for the next load of laundry when sheâll wash it and return it to him.Â
The stupid shirt is the beginning of the story.Â
It was a mission, not out of the ordinary, where they were fighting some sort of monster that attacks whenever people answer its riddles wrong. Normally not an issue, but it stole someoneâs house from them and wouldnât let anyone in until someone answered his question. Mira had shown it to them the moment they arrived, a smirk on her face. It was perfect for them, if you think about it, because Lucy could solve the riddle and Natsu could do whatever Natsu did.Â
She did not think much of Miraâs smirk till the creature had tore off the entirely of her shirt and bra with one wicked scream. It hadnât marred her skin at all, but her hysterical screech would have made people think it had. She should be used to it, shirtless adventures are her specialty at this rate, but it had been⊠unexpected.
âAttacksâ was a bit of a broad term for somebody that only tore peopleâs clothes off. Natsu probably would have found it funny if Lucy hadnât been so pissed â and then upset when someone came to investigate. In the end, he had torn off his shirt and wrapped it around her; it was a snug fit over her bust, but it hid her nakedness from the villagers when they made their walk home. All in all, just an ordinary mission and they had went straight back to the guild after.Â
She drops her face into her hands with a groan, recalling the murmur around the guild:  âIs that his shirt?â followed by âWho won the bet?â and ending with  âMira cheated!â
They were betting on them! Lucy had left straight after, face flushed, because she certainly didnât think about him that way. Nope, not even a little bit. Except, he went after her, because he was Natsu and she was Lucy, and when one left, the other followed. And thenâŠ
âSo dumb!â she cries into her hands, feeling the heat building on her face as the memory of his lips when sheâ âStupid!âÂ
âWho is?âÂ
Lucy screams and whirls around, heart clutched at the collar of her shirt as though it will somehow help her.Â
Natsu doesnât blink. âWho is stupid?â He repeats, lounging on her couch with his legs crossed beneath him, a little frown on his face. It says a lot about him and about them that she doesnât fling her shoes at him. Likely because she isnât wearing shoes and therefore canât throw something that isnât there, but the sentiment remains.Â
âIâm stupid,â she says, sighing, because she can only avoid him so long.Â
âI donât think Iâve ever seen you stupid,â he admits, scratching his head, more hesitant than sheâs ever seen him. It sends alarm bells ringing her head and guilt pounding through her system. Stupid kiss. She just had wanted him to stop talking, she hadnât thought it would be⊠more. She hadnât thought it would open the flood gates and her own eyes in the same instant. Stupid feelings.Â
âAre you flirting with me?â she chuckles, but then blanches because no no no no, she didnât mean that. And thatâs the thing now, her words are always going to be a little more slow, a little more thoughtful, because sheâll worry that heâll read into it. Thatâll he see those stupid, pesky, awakened feelings. He was always rather good at getting a reaction out of her, she doesnât know how she didnât connect the dots till then.Â
Natsu interrupts her mental gymnastics. âWill I be able to kiss you at some point if I say yes?â
She blinks slowly. âIâŠâ Her brain tries to restart and fails, an odd sort of splutter escaping her that makes him grin a little. The look is almost bashful, but he climbs to his feet and approaches her, licking his lips when he stands right before her, seemingly confused and relieved when her eyes flicker down and up again. âDo you want to? Kiss me, I mean.â
âYes.â And he doesnât say he would have told her already if she didnât avoid him, but she can read it on his face all the same. She raises her hand, fingers trembling, till its resting on his chest, where his heart races nearly as fast as hers. She doesnât move and slowly, slowly, his heart rate returns to normal. His hand lifts, settling on top of hers, and she shouldnât be surprised at the gentle touch because he had always been gentle with her. âAre you alright?â
âYes. In shock, maybe.â
His chest shakes beneath her fingers as he laughs. âDidnât expect the week to end up this way, eh?âÂ
âNo, not particularly.â He laughs again and she drops her forehead onto his chest, embarrassment bringing a flood of warmth to her face. His chin drops on her head and she lets out a breath because the shock is fading bit by bit. He wants to kiss her, thatâs right, no need to worry about those stupid pesky feelings anymore. âWhat do we do now?â She has questions, many of them really.
âThe usual, but first⊠Did you add me to the story now?â He releases her, walking to her writing desk.
âWhat do you mean?â Then she remembers: her inability to write because her thoughts wouldnât keep drifting to him and the near mindless doodles of his name. âNO DONâT READ THAT!â

Youâre all gonna be the death of me. Hereâs angst but then fluff because no.
spoilers for chapter 538 + speculation on what might happen.Â
Lucy is cold all over as though there was a permanent layer of ice that neither thawed nor faded as she, Gray, and Happy limped, tears streaming down their faces, to the guild. The others are there, Lucy can see them in the distance, a pinch to their expressions as Happyâs mournful wailing fills the air in the aftermath of Lucyâs scream.Â
Thereâs no doubt that they each know who is missing.Â
She lingers back, her feet stuck in place. Gray looks over his shoulder once, concerned, but the grief on her face is enough to send him walking with some reluctance, allowing her this moment of silence to think.Â
Her thoughts, however, have never been more empty.Â
How could they be so close to the end only to fail here? Her arms cross, fingers digging into the opposite; the mark is no longer burning through her, but she can still feel the warmth of it sometimes. Itâs the only part of her that doesnât feel as though it were submerged in a deep, bottomless pit.Â
She swears she can hear his voice still.Â
Had it only been minutes ago that he had told them about the first? Only minutes since all the tension had dropped from her shoulders at the sight of his smile then returned tenfold with his sudden absence? Itâs a roller coaster that leaves her head aching, but none so worse than the pain in her chest as something presses hard against the organs beating there, demanding her attention. Demanding her tears. As if she has much else to give.Â
In the distance, she hears fearful shouts in the guild.Â
In the distance, she feels a rush of magic sweep over her and her knees crash to the ground from the force. Her eyes screw shut. The shouts from in the guild turn to screams as the sky above them cracks like glass and roar slips through so loud that her head feels as though it were ringing. She knows that sound; Tenrou had been so long ago it seemed like, but her memory recalls it clear as day: Acnologia.Â
A warm hand touches her face, trailing over her cheeks on their path to cover her ears. She leans into the touch, her eyes still shut, her memory tricking her into thinking it was familiar.Â
âLucy?â
No, she wonât fall for a trick. She wonât open her eyes. If she doesnât, the ghost touching her face so light it could be a caress would only be a dream -- and she wants no dream, not when the real thing had been so close.Â
âLucy, câmon, we canât stay here,â he says, voice dropping to a plea. It sounds like him, feels like him, smells like him. It canât be him though.Â
She shakes her head, her eyes burning, but she refuses to cry. No tears over a dream. No tears over a memory. It had only been five minutes and he already haunts her.Â
He makes a noise like a growl and then sheâs flying as someone hefts her up, an arm sliding beneath her knees and the other supporting her back. The grip is firm and she trusts it not to drop her though her arms fly around his neck, gripping onto a piece of cloth around the back of his neck and she recognizes the feel of it.Â
Her eyes open. Itâs dirty, the edges frayed from the fight and from age, and she sees stains against it that could be blood, but she knows what it is. âNat...su...â She breathes, trembling as he tightens his grip on her. His face is bloodied still and despite the wreckage of his arm, he makes no move to put her down, even when she tries to squirm away, and if thatâs not proof enough that this is really, truly him, then the way he looks down at her, fondness and exasperation all in one, is enough to convince her.
Though she should have none left in her, her tears spill down her face, dripping off her jaw and she canât bring herself to care. Her arms tighten around his neck and he grunts, forehead falling forward against her face, and itâs all awkward, all strange, the worse timing of all worse timing, but she kisses him anyway, feather light kisses against his cheeks, his nose, his jaw, and, finally, his lips as she sobs his name.
He finally lets her down, his uninjured arm holding her shoulder and then trailing up her neck, careful of the bruises, to hold her face. His forehead drops on hers and the kiss he brushes against her lips is so chaste that she barely feels it. But itâs enough to stop the tears and the sobs and she falls somewhat silent.Â
âHow?â She asks when the only tremble left is in her voice.Â
âDunno. I got flashes of a locket...? And of you.â He frowns, serious, but then his face brights up. She blinks slowly, but she canât complain at the shift in attitude. Sheâll never complain again, sheâs sure, about his weird habits. âWe have a dragons ass to kick and friends to see though, Luce, weâll figure out how later. Letâs go!âÂ
She thinks of Happy. She thinks of Gray. She thinks of the people at the guild, mourning him and all theyâve lost, and she grips his wrist, her limbs recovering from the ice and from the shock, dragging him towards the guild. âWe gotta go tell them. They need to know. We need to... We need to... We need to finish this already. No more dying.âÂ
âNo more dying,â he echoes, fingers tightening around hers.Â
To my good friend Sara ( @natsusluceâ ) on her birthday! Thank you for being an awesome friend and for talking about Fairy Tail enough that I got into it too!

Natsu didnât move and his unnatural stillness is what drew her eyes to him. They were trekking through the underbrush of a lush forest to the south of Fiore, where the weather was heavier and brighter in an absence of all seasons except summer whenever the sun was out and dropping into deep winter come sundown. It was his element and he had been nothing but lively since their arrival, enjoying the scorching heat and then blistering cold, smirking whenever Lucy would cuddle close to him for warmth. His restlessness only settled when he was holding her, but the rest of the time he bounced around in a flutter, observing everything in their path. Something about the forest was fascinating to him, though she didnât know what or why.
âNatsu?â Lucy asked, hand resting on his bare shoulder, the heat of his skin surging through her pleasantly. His usual vest was absent, wrapped around his wounded arm, but it made no difference in this weather. Her eyes flickered down to the fabric around his arm, narrowing her eyes as though she could see through his vest to the cut beneath it. âIs it your injury? Did you pull the stitches again? I told you that maybe I should lead so you didnât strain yourself.â
She turned him gently, not that it mattered since her friend had seemed to turn into a mindless golem, eyes locked blankly ahead. It wasnât a threat that held his attention â no, he would spring into action, pained injury or not, if there was something dangerous ahead, but his silence made it seem all the more ominous. Her eyes strayed to the trees, but she could see nothing aside from dirt, rocks, and other fallen logs. She shook her head, opening the pack on his back for water; they were running low on supplies and if they didnât find their way to civilization eventually, they would have to result to something cruder for injuries.
Like cauterizing them. Lucy wished to avoid that particular idea for as long as possible.
After poking her finger on a dull knife twice, she finally found their canteen of water. She rattled it, hearing the slosh of liquid inside. It was low, lower than usual, and they hadnât seen rain in the forest since they arrived â or, if it had, the foliage had stolen it before it could reach them. âNatsu, we need to find a stream or something still,â she said, closing his pack and shoving the water in his hand. The action jolted him and he looked sideways at her with confusion. âHere, drink this. Now, do I need to redress your wound?â
âWhat?â He sniffed the air, fingers tightening around the canteen before releasing it with a frustrated sigh. Part of their issue was the strange flora in the area that seemed to block out all else from his nose; then, the forest seemed to be a constant buzz of activity and he could barely hear anything, even with his advanced hearing. It was a strange place, eerie in a way, though its beauty did much in easing her fear. Still, she would be glad to grab the plant for their employer and flee.
If they could ever find the damn thing.
âYouâve been practically catatonic for a while,â she replied, tapping the canteen pointedly. With a sigh, he uncapped it and took a quick, shallow drink before offering it over to her. âThanks. Are you okay or not?â
âIâm fine, Lucy, look I could do a handstand right now!â
âNo, donât!â She gripped his non-injured arm before he could, scoffing at his laughter. âIf your arm isnât bothering you, whatâs up? Is there something out there?â Lucy stepped closer, peering where he had stared before, rethinking her decision about ignoring a possible threat. It was unlike Natsu to freeze in place at the sight of one â but then, it was unlike her to rely solely on his instincts. Then, her instincts werenât whistling or demanding her senses; they were calm and serene, hearing and seeing nothing that demanded their attention.
What then?â
Sheepishly, Natsu shifted on his feet and she stared incredulously at him. Master had set them up together on a mission months prior, seeing that their animosity had chemistry that would be good in a battle and their magic worked well together; though Lucy was loathe to hang out with him in the beginning, his excitement and earnestness had won her over eventually. Sheepish, however, was not a personality trait he ever displayed. This was, after all, the boy who had shamelessly stolen a crown from the king on their last job.
âI was thinking,â Natsu explained, head tilted so that his pinkish hair fell over his eyes, masking them from her view. She squinted at him, a brief hum escaping her to urge him on. âNothing, itâs not important. Letâs go, I think thereâs a clear ahead, we can make camp there. Maybe weâll find a stream, too.â
Suspicious, she didnât immediately follow him when he started walking, but eventually, she conceded, jogging to catch up with him. She matched his stride, trying to catch his eye with no success as they walked along a barely noticeable trail. The forest buzzed with activity around them, the creatures preparing for the rapidly approaching sunset and she didnât worry about how they would find a place to rest for the night, too confused by his unnatural silence to worry about something as silly as survival.
She stumbled over an overgrown root, hands flailing for something to catch herself on, but his warm hands caught around her waist, lifting her up and over the root in one fluid motion. The heat of his palms warmed her through her thin shirt and she ducked her head to hide the sudden flush on her face; she had seen him punch someone unconscious with one hit with these hands and yet he held her gently, carefully, as though she were something precious, even in an act as simple as helping her over a tree root. It was ridiculous for her to feel this flutter in her at every touch; though their animosity had faded since their first encounter, he was still her friend above all else. And yet the way she felt for Natsu was a far cry from the way she felt for anyone else.
âItâs not much farther, I think,â he said quietly, dropping his hands from her. She swallowed back all other emotion, nodding at him wordlessly, afraid that if she opened her mouth the words that would escape werenât a reply to his statement at all. He looked at her for a moment, seemingly unsure about her silence, but she ducked her head, hiding her face much as he hid his eyes and he grunted, his hand reaching for her wrist as butterflies fluttered in her stomach, leading them on.
âŠ
It was only a short few minutes later before they stepped into the clearing, though Lucy hadnât even noticed they were close to it till he tugged her between two curving trees and over an annoyingly large boulder. One moment in the forest, the next they were standing in a dimly lit clearing, the sun just barely managing to flicker through the trees ahead. Blue, pink, and yellow flowers danced on a light breeze, their scent lifting to her nose; it was pleasant, subtler than she expected for how many of them were around.
Natsu frowned. âItâs bigger than I expected,â he noted, glancing around, stepping deeper inside and she blinked away the beauty of it. The flowers curved around the edges of the clearing, paving the way to a grassy, flowerless middle. Natsu crouched down, fingers pressing into the dirt before he straightened with a sigh. âThe ground is dry, there hasnât been any rain here recently.â
She tilted her head up. The sun was nearly gone and the temperature dropped with it; the beads of sweat forming on her face would surely freeze tonight. âThose donât look like rain clouds either,â she said, wiping her face with a look of disgust. Â
âProbably a good thing. As much as we need water soon, I wouldnât want to wake up in a soggy sleeping bag,â he said, snorting as he set his bag down on a patch of grass. He edged into the surrounding trees for dry wood and she ducked around for rocks, setting them up in the center, creating a small looking trench for a fire. The perk of having a dragon-demon for a company was the ease of creating heat, even if she would wind up curled up pillowing her head on his chest in a few hours, and she didnât bother trying to wrestle a flame into being.
When he returned, they spent a few minutes setting up before it got dark, the day trading itself slowly to the night, and by the time they had food roasting over the flames, the sky was completely dark. Some clouds lingered in the air, illuminating in shades of yellow and white from the waxing moon and she gazed up at them briefly before scooting closer to the fire as temperature began to drop.
âGotten used to all the smells yet?â Lucy asked, adjusting the meat over the fire. Natsu watched the flames bitterly, but he couldnât eat them anymore than she could and she fought a laugh. Maybe tomorrow night she would make the flame herself, if only to offer him some of it to eat, but it was too late for that and she settled on roasting the food to perfection instead.
âNah, too many different things, itâs like you spilled all your perfume on my head,â he complained, wiping his nose at the thought. âI reckon itâll be alright in another day or two.â
âI hope weâre not actually here for another day or two. How long does it take to find this stupid plant? Are we sure this is even the right forest for it?â Her eyes flickered to their bag. There was a map of the region inside and they had looked it over half a dozen times with the same results: this was the right place. The plant was here somewhere. They just had to find it and that was easier said than done. âHe could have been more specific.â
âDonât think heâs ever set foot in this place, I would smell it on him,â Natsu disagreed, eyeing the meat hungrily. She shivered, crouching close enough to the flames that the smoke made her eyes burn. He caught her arm with a snort and pulled her back before her face became friends with the fire, settling close behind her like her own personal heater. Considering she had been using him as a blanket the past few nights, that wasnât far from the truth. She smiled in thanks and he grinned.
âWeâve got to be closer. He said the temperature got extreme the closer we got to it, didnât he?â
âHotter during the day, colder at night, closer to the center, something like that,â he said, shrugging. âDunno. Does it feel hotter or colder to you?â
Some of the meat caught fire and she pulled it from the flames, holding it out to Natsu, who preferred his meat somewhat charred. âNot really, this whole place is either a sauna or a freezer all the time, I canât really tell when it gets worse or not. We should be close to the center though if we followed the path right, it was a straight shot from last night.â
Lucyâs food finished and she plucked the stick from the fire, leaning away from the smoke to eat. Her back bumped into his chest, but he only spread his legs and drew her to sit fully against him. His arm settled around her, holding her close, and her heart raced. It was so⊠intimate and gentle, like he was holding a lover rather than a friend. Her face heated up and she shoved a piece of meat in her mouth, shaking the thought off, unable to believe she would think about him twice in one day like that. Â
âThis seems like the type of place Igneel would take you to see. He would like the warm weather, wouldnât he?â She asked softly. Though it had been some years since Igneel had left him, she knew that the wound was hit or miss on Natsu; some days he could talk about his father for ages without pausing for breath and others it was as though all the breath had left him entirely, leaving a stony statue behind.
Today was the former.
âHe wouldâve love the heat, but the cold? Nah, it would be unbearable.â
âI thought he was a fire dragon? How does he even get cold?â She tried not to notice the past tense of his words, if only because he switched between the two. She guessed that was the part of him that was losing hope.
âDragons donât feel temperature much, he went swimming in a volcano once. Probably the happiest heâs ever been that Iâve seen, said it was the warmest heâs ever been. Nobody has frozen him solid yet, but I reckon it would be the same. Cold, but not freezing, I mean. Nah, he just likes to complain about things,â he said, laughing. âI think he would like it here sometimes though, once we got over the smell.â It was back to present tense and though the thought made her sad, she smiled at the fondness in his voice.
âWhen did he go swimming in a volcano?â She asked, confused. âYou havenât told that story before.â She thought there was little else she could learn about the story of Igneel and Natsu, but she supposed that was arrogance speaking. There werenât enough years to cover their entire story, but as he told her stories of his childhood growing up with the dragon, she thought they were cutting a few months off the time.
She didnât mind. For someone who couldnât write a story to save his life, he weaved a story just as well as any other author with his words alone. It was touching that he would share them with her, stories so special to him, and when the topic wandered to her own family, she opened just the same, talking of the years before her motherâs death and the years after.
Sometime while they spoke, her head fell back to rest on one of his shoulders. It had been a long day leaving her little ability to focus on staying awake despite how much she craved to hear the rest of his stories. He laughed quietly and she absently felt him shifting them to their sleeping bags, giving up the pretext of sleeping separately when he settled back, holding her in his arms.
âNight, Lucy.â
âGânight, Natsu.â
âŠ
She woke much later to something very cold landing on her cheek and she wiped it off sleepily, rolling onto her side to bury her face in Natsuâs back. It was cold, too cold really, and every part of her that was exposed to the air felt as though it were frozen. Goosebumps rose on the back of her neck and she shivered violently against him, curling closer. It would be awkward tomorrow, but she didnât care if it meant that she would be a little warmer.
Natsu shifted over to her, allowing her to nestle into his chest as his chin dropped onto her head with an incoherent mumble. Another something landed on her hair and slowly her eyes flickered open; she could see nothing except the scar on his neck, exposed without his scarf to cover it. Briefly, she wondered where that was, but she figured it was packed away for the night.
Why did she wake up again? She allowed her eyes to close again, but once more, something landed on her.
Oh, right.
She twisted a little, trying not to wake him, but froze as whiteness caught her eye. Fluttering from the sky and reflecting off the bit of light that shifted through the clouds was a snowflake. The ground itself was slowly changing from the deep green to a muddy white except for dying fire and their bed.
What had the man said? Temperature extremes?
Snow was definitely an extreme.
âNatsu,â she whispered, unsure of why. The air felt so fragile that a loud noise would surely shatter it. Her breath came out in a wisp of fog and she fought a shiver as she leaned over him, lips brushing his ar. âNatsu, wake up.â
It was a testament to how well he knew her that he woke up immediately, his eyes darting around for the source of her concerned voice. Seeing nothing, he blinked at her quizzically, the sleepiness beginning to return to his eyes before snow clicked into his mind. He sat up, narrowly avoiding a collision with her head in his haste. âItâs snowing! How?â
âI think we must be in the center,â she said, wrapping her arms around herself at the sudden gust of wind. âWe should look for the plant before the snow gets any heavier, we certainly canât sleep out here anymore.â For someone not wearing a shirt, Natsu looked entirely unfazed by the snow; it melted in his pink hair or sizzled against his skin to the point that he didnât realize notice it even when he stood up.
âHere, stick close to me.â He held out his hand to her. She accepted it gratefully, lurching to her feet ungracefully. The coldness in the air made her feel as though her legs were made of wood, her entire body tensed to hold in heat and she squeezed his hand, grateful that he didnât release it. It might have been her imagination, but there was a steady creeping warmth from where he held her, one that did some to ease her shivering. âI can actually smell now. The snow seems to be diluting everything else.â
âA snow blanket,â she murmured, shifting her eyes around for something that stuck out from the darkness when their location occurred to her. She groaned, âWeâre in a field of flowers, how are we supposedâ â
âThere, do you see it?â
âI⊠â Lucy scowled. A tiny flower poked out from the snow in a brilliant shade of red, the very air around it seeming to sizzle with energy. Though they didnât know what the plant looked like, she couldnât imagine there were many other magical flowers around in the center of a forest with extreme, fluctuating temperatures. âI canât believe it was sitting next to us the whole time, we could have left ages ago!â Â
âWasnât here earlier, one of us would have seen it. Probably doesnât bloom around people,â he said, pulling her over to it so he could crouch over it, sniffing suspiciously. Lucy swallowed the lump in her throat. If they hadnât gone to sleep, they probably wouldnât have found it and they would have been stuck wandering the forest for ages. âWe just need one of the leaves, right?â
âYeah, hold on, Iâll get the bag.â Lucy hesitated to release his hand, but scowled and dropped it, walking back to the center of their camp. Their bag was where they left it and she dug around till her fingers closed around a glass jar. She brought it back over and crouched down. âOkay, Iâll do it, I donât know how well itâll react to you.â
The downsides of having a dragon-demon as a companion was the unusual way magic reacted to him. Most friends would flip a coin to see who would pull the switch on something potentially dangerous, but they had little choice when it came to them.
Hesitantly, Lucy held the flower steady with one hand, wincing at the tiny prickles pressing against her skin, and reached for one of the slender leaves. When she plucked it, the plant gave an odd sort of shudder, the magic around it rippling violently. She swore and stumbled back. Natsu caught her around the waist, taking a large leap back as the flower exploded in a shower of rainbow lights, arching up straight into the sky. The previously tame clouds darkened, lightning flashing and thunder cracking as the clouds swirled around and around the beam of light, disappearing as it crept closer to the center.
With a blinding flash of light, the magic disappeared, leaving a crystal-clear sky behind.
Lucy and Natsu gaped, the leaf trembling in Lucyâs hand. It was only when her teeth stopped chattered that she snapped out of it. She shoved the leaf into the jar, shaking her head in disbelief. âDid we just destroy an eco-system?â
â⊠Maybe,â Natsu said uncertainly. âLetâs run before someone finds out. Find somewhere else to camp tonight and then head home in the morning?â
âRight behind you.â
They managed to pack the camp in only a few minutes, Natsuâs bag laden with their few unpacked items before he caught her hand, pulling her into the trees.
âIâd rather not stick around and wait to see what investigates that,â he said, shaking his head about ten minutes later. âFigures you would pick a dangerous job.â
âHow was I supposed to know collecting a planet would be so dangerous? I thought we were helping an old lady clean her garden.â
âOn second thought, this is much more fun than that. Youâre not allowed to pick jobs anymore,â he announced, holding back a tree branch till she passed by and then letting it snap forward, seemingly amused by the noise it made. The forest was alive with noise once more, louder than it had been previous nights, and she guessed whatever magic developed in this forest had broken enough for everything to wake up.
âYou canât lecture me about jobs choices. Werenât you the one who wanted to go fight giant spiders and led to us nearly getting eaten and married? If Happy hadnât come along, Iâd be spider chow and youâd be married to one of their daughters.â
âShe was a nice lady-- Err, spider.â
âCould you even understand her?â Lucy asked skeptically, climbing over a boulder without his help and waiting for him on the other side.
âNo, but she didnât eat me so thatâs nice,â he said with a cheerful grin, dropping down beside her. âUh, where are we?â
Lucy stopped walking. He bumped into her back, steadying her when she stumbled forward, but she didnât utter any thanks. âYou⊠you donât know? I was following your lead!â
He paused for a long second, thinking very carefully about something. She hoped it had to do with knowing where they are, but then he shrugged and said, âOh, well, then weâre lost.â
âNatsuâŠâ
âSo, should we set up camp again?â He dropped his bag on the ground, stretching briefly before he pulled out the two sleeping bags.
âWeâve been only been walking for half an hour.â It was saying something that Lucy was complaining about settling down earlier; most of the time, their roles were reversed, though she admitted that wearing comfortable shoes instead of her heels meant that she could walk for much longer. Â (She missed her heels anyway). Then she sighed. âWe canât walk any farther though till we know where we are. Having that compass spirit would be very useful right now.â But, no, they had to get the reward after they completed the job.
âLetâs sleep.â
âYouâre very enthusiastic about that.â
âIâm tired.â Natsu plopped onto his sleeping bag, laying down.
âThatâs a first,â she said, laughing, almost sure they had fallen asleep already. The temperature in the forest had risen since the flower disappeared, she didnât need to sleep next to him technically speaking, but there was a crispness to the air still that made her shiver. She didnât argue or move away as she would have normally â she swore she would have â and laid down next to him.
Their elbows brushed when they were both on their backs, but Lucy didnât mind so much.
She was tired enough to sleep and yetâŠ
Her thoughts wouldnât settle enough.
A long moment passed and then another with only their breathing and the sounds of the forest. She couldnât even tell at that point whether Natsu was awake or not. She wondered if he felt it too, the weird stirring in the air. Not unpleasant like the flower pricking her did, but strange all the same.
âHey, Lucy?â She titled her head, only a little surprised to find that his eyes were wide open. His gaze was on the sky with a puzzled frown. He didnât speak and she wondered if maybe he wasnât sure what he wanted to say. Lucy turned on her side, scooting closer to nudge him. He blinked and asked, âWhich star is the north one again?â
âAre you stargazing?â
âCanât sleep.â He didnât say why and she didnât ask. She scooted closer to him, resting her head near his and lifting his hand to point at the star.
âMy mom used to tell me stories about it, said the north star would always lead you home. I used to think she made it up all on her own, that she was clever and creative, more so than any other mother,â Lucy said with a fond giggle. âI didnât know until I was much older that everybody knew the north star fact, there wasnât anything particularly special about me knowing it. She showed me where it was though, thatâs more than most people knew.â
âWhatâs the point in knowing the fact if you canât use it?â He muttered.
Lucy shrugged. âThereâs the constellation Virgo.â
âI donât see a gorilla,â he said, squinting where she pointed. âOr a maid.â
âThe constellation doesnât look like that, you know. Thatâs just how she looks.â She paused, frowning. âActually, I donât know what she really looks like. She said that she appeared as Duke Everlue wanted to see her and how I wanted to see her â I wonder what she really looks like? No, you donât have to appear and tell me, Virgo, Iâm just musing,â she said aloud, unsure if the maid was listening, but sending the words along nonetheless.
Natsu lifted one of his hands, gesturing to the sky. âGot any stories about dragons to do with these?â
She smiled. âA few actually. Want me to tell you one?â
âYes.â
She did.
There was something whimsical about stargazing that kept her awake, a bit like the world was a little brighter and a little nicer just from looking at them. Like her worries were small and inconsequential when she thought about them. When the dragon story ended, she started up with another one, pillowing herself against Natsuâs side when the air grew chilly, her voice a low whisper only for the two of them to share.
For once, she didnât think about how close they were as she used his arm as a pillow or how his hand was tracing along her spine, raising goosebumps as he went. She didnât think about the way her fingers had found her way into his free hand, resting together on his chest. She didnât think about how his scent tickled her nose or the way they shifted onto their sides, faces so close together that their noses brushed. She didnât think about how her words drifted off, carried away by the light breeze, unnoticed by either of them as their faces crept closer and closer together.
Her lips brushed his in a chaste kiss. Something soft and warmed shifted in her chest as she pulled back, smiling at him and when he smiled back, the same sort of softness in his eyes, she couldnât help leaning forward, kissing him again. Her heart stopped and stuttered as his hand rested on her cheek, stroking her jaw as his lips molded against her. His lips were chapped, but oh so soft and her eyes drifted closed against her will, overwhelmed by the emotions racing through her.
It was more potent than any drink, softer than any smile, warmer than any hug. Lucy loved it and she let out a little happy sigh when they broke away for air.
She didnât say anything nor did he. They curled together, one of her legs comfortably tucked beneath his and her head pillowing on his arm, head tucked beneath his chin, and finally drifted into a quiet, peaceful sleep. Â
âŠ
Their employer was a short, stout man with beady eyes and an air of haughtiness about him, but when Natsu and Lucy approached him three days later, hands clasped together, the man let out a delighted laugh. âAh, so you were successful!â
âEh?â Natsu asked blankly.
âWe were,â Lucy said, tilting her head with a pleasantly curious look on her face. âI wasnât aware that someone informed you ahead of time?â
âNonsense, I would recognize the effects at any time.â
Lucy froze, her grip on Natsuâs hand slacking. Effects? Did the flower do something? âW-What do you mean?â
âItâs a very powerful flower, it affects the environment where it chooses to live. It detonates when itâs leave disappear, returning to the atmosphere for a while and then returning down during the next rain fall to begin the cycle again. The leaves, however, are more effective on people than the environment.â
âHow so?â Her thoughts raced. They had spoken a lot since they left the forest, but neither had considered the possibility that their feelings were fabricated. Had the flower done that?
No.
No flower could induce such emotion. She had been under the effects of a charm before, she had felt that tingle in her body that came from false emotions, but it was nothing compared to the way she had felt from his kisses or he from hers. It was like comparing a candle stick to a bonfire or a stick to a sword â it was similar, but it wasnât the same.
She let out a small little breath, her fingers tightening on Natsu, who watched her with a worried expression on his face. His lips twitched at the gesture, turning back to the man. Lucy hadnât heard a word of what he was saying and the blankness on her face must have shown because he laughed, a full belly type of laugh, the kind that would have done someone in Fairy Tail proud.
âAh, I bore you with the science behind it. The leaves are the key ingredient to a truth charm, very rare to come across, of course, but very potent and very recognizable to the trained eye, I might add. I imagine people around you will be speaking only in truths for a while. You could bathe in water treated with a mixture of lavender and a special root found in Joya, of courseâŠâ The man prattled on, but neither Lucy nor Natsu paid attention to it, sharing a secret smile.
She knew their feelings were true, but it was nice to know all the same.

Here, friend! I also got your other request, I promise to get to it soon! (prompt from here)
Lucy trips at the last second, but itâs not a total loss, even if the clock hand goes flying out of her palms and clatters against a rock, narrowly falling off the ledge into the ravine below. Itâs been the better part of a week since Michelleâs arrival and they were no closer to figuring out what the clock hand or its ominous words meant -- but that didnât stop an entire goon squad from trying to attack them and take it.Â
Her knees scrap painfully against the dirt and twigs, but she rolls and tucks in a move that Natsu tried to teach her months back -- before the seven years, before Tenrou even -- and back onto her feet again in time to dodge some sickly spell that cuts off a part of her pigtails. She watches the strands sadly, but she straightens, hands drifting to the whip at her side.Â
She isnât so easily subdued. Her whip snaps out, wrapping around a goon legs and jerks; he falls back with a cry, rolling back down the hill in a pitiful heap that knocks down two of his comrades. She longs for her keys, but Michelle holds all of them safely in her satchel with all the girlâs other supplies that Natsu himself didnât hold and she regrets not clipping them to her side, even if they were going to a beach to meet Erza and the rest.Â
Something whizzes past her ear and she flinches away, throwing away her guilt for leaving her only weapons behind. Even without her keys, she can do this; they werenât her crutch and Lucy had spent days fighting with Natsu for something like this. She snaps the whip at the ground when one runs for her, shooting up dirt and then wraps it around someoneâs elbow, tugging them hard. They clatter to the ground, biting their tongue and she kicks them for good measure, pleased when they fall silent. Two down, three to go, and sheâs grateful, at least, that they arenât particularly bright.Â
If they charge her as one, no amount of keys were going to stop them.Â
Idiots.
A spells strikes her wrist and she flinches, letting the whip drop from her fingers. The flames and magic on it die instantly, not even sizzling the dirt around it, and she contains a growl when one of them kick it down the hill, out of her way. Down a weapon, she resorts to her hands and fists, downing one of them before the other grabs her arms.
-- and then flames are racing through the trees to the left of them. She screams. The goons scream. A bird nearby screams, but she thinks it might have just been startled. The goons let her go, flailing back against the fire, and she falls back on her bottom with a thump.
âNatsu! Are you insane? You could have burnt the forest down!â
He drops out of nowhere, which is impressive, and looks her over, the fierceness of his eyes cutting her words off before she can continue them. She stays still for a moment before rolling her eyes and climbing to her feet. Dirt sticks to her bottom and she brushes it off with a scowl directed somewhat at him for knocking her over.
He cringes and nods, satisfied that she was unhurt, before facing the two remaining goons, both of which are frozen in place as the fire separating them withers and dies.Â
âI could handle this,â she tells him, stepping to stand next to him. One of the goons recovers, his magic flaring to life at the sign of a new competitor. Sheâs a little insulted that she wasnât worthy of him using full power already, but that just makes her all the more determined to punch his face in for ruining her vacation.
He cracks a grin. âYou canât have all the fun. You get one, I get the other, yeah?âÂ
Hello, I love your writing. Can you please do #14 with the Uni prompt. Also I submitted a prompt request last week, and I don't know if you wrote it and I missed it, or if you haven't gotten to it yet. I hope that didn't sound rude or that I'm rushing you. I'm sorry if it does.
Hey, friend! Do you remember what your request was? I have a few still waiting in my inbox that I havenât written yet⊠If you let me know which one, I can bump it up though and no worries, itâs not rushing me, I definitely need a kick in the pants sometimes anyway! â„ If I did post it though, you can check here.Â
Extra long one for making you wait for your other request!Â
title: Are You Still Watchingpairing: nalurating: K+words: ~2100summary: Lucy needs a break from her overbearing father. What better way than watching Netflix over someoneâs shoulder at the library? (prompt from here)
Her father has Lucy on a leash even halfway across Fiore and itâs a little unsettling to the outside eye to see that he calls her the exact second glasses are supposed to end with a demand worded as a request. He only lets her go to school, really, so he can flaunt the fact that his daughter was getting a business degree to take over for him. Something to brag about to his friends.
It was strange, really, how she went from only worthy of marrying someone and granting him a grandson to the actual heir to his business. She doesnât quite know which one is better, really, because at least as a baby-making machine she was left to her own interests, as far as though interests didnât interfere with matchmaking.Â
Now, as an adult, sheâs stuck under his thumb worse than ever and itâs only the creative writing classes that keeps her going. Maybe itâs not polite to admit sheâll skip out from under his thumb and out of school the moment she canât take them anymore, but she figures if he can bully her into attending school, she can damn well take a class she actually likes.
Sheâs in the library now, her phone stubbornly buzzing on the desk in front of her, and she feels a trickle of exhaustion creep over her. Her day is class, business with her father, and then falling asleep in her bed â only to wake up abruptly at the reminder of all the homework awaiting her, but she digresses. The most important part of her wandering thoughts: sheâs tired.Â
She picks up her phone, scribbling a message to her father.Â
Father, I will be studying at the library for an important upcoming test and unable to attend the lunch with Mr. Everlue. Please send along my apologies and well wishes.Â
Itâs a lie in only the smallest test. She does have an upcoming test, just not for a few more weeks and that gives her plenty of time. She feels a little bad for fibbing, but when he sends his reply back â formal, but as positive as he could get â she canât feel anything except relief. She has a whole afternoon to herself. The first in ages, perhaps.Â
ExceptâŠÂ
What do people do with their free time?
A man with shocking pink hair laughs obnoxiously, earning a jab and a shush to the gut from a friend sitting beside him. Both are sitting at the desk across from her, their backs to her, allowing her to only see pink hair and black hair. âOuch, donât hit me, stripper, this is my computer!â The one with pink hair says.Â
Stripper scoffs. âNatsu, youâre the one who is going to get us kicked out. Do you really want Erza to come over here?âÂ
Pink haired man â Natsu â seems to acknowledge the threat as they both share a shiver, looking back at the computer. Natsu shifts a little, getting comfortable, and she can see his screen now. She doesnât recognize what it is, but she can see a television show playing and she leans forward, hands resting on her desk, to peek at the font playing across the bottom of the screen.Â
She can see some of it. Just not enough, but the flashing images of the crime show they watch is entertaining even without the words. She canât see names or dialogue, but she can read between the lines and she builds a story up herself, leaning forward in her seat to watch closely.Â
Minutes, hours, days later, the one named Stripper stretches and she pouts when they shut off the show. It had just gotten to a good part and she wants to know what happens to the detective and her new, supernatural consultant. âTry not to be late for class, Flame Brain.â
âDonât tell me what to do,â Natsu grumbles, beginning to pack up his laptop and she gaps at his features. His messy pink hair is natural, of all the strangest things, but more than that, heâs actually handsome and Lucy rarely thinks that about anyone, certainly not the people in her social circles. She canât tell how tall he is, but she can see his muscular arms as he puts his things away with long, graceful fingers and though he has a splattering of scars on his arms and one on his cheek, heâs got a happy grin on his face despite his words, one that makes him all the more handsome.Â
Sheâs still staring when he looks up, seeming to sense the eyes on him, and a mental yelp escapes her as she darts her gaze down to an opened notebook in front of her. Itâs only when his chair scraps and his footsteps disappear that she lets out a breath, cursing herself for falling into such a deadly trap as ogling.Â
His eyes are definitely the best part, a lively green, and only a split second of eye-contact led her to believe that he had little to no secrets in them. Like she was looking into his soul.Â
She slaps her heated cheeks, willing the blush to go down, but itâs not like sheâll ever see him again. Thereâs no reason for her to worry so much about what he might think of her.Â
Thatâs what she thinks until the next day when she sees him again. Heâs watching what she now knows is Netflix, his friend noticeably absent and his feet propped up on the chair across from him. Â She sends a text to her father, not even bothering to wait for his reply as she takes a seat near him; she can read the subtitles now and she conceals a smile, using her textbook as a shield. If he chances a glance, sheâs just coincidentally looking in his direction, sheâs definitely not borrowing his laptop screen for entertainment.Â
And, really, she thinks itâs a little ridiculous that sheâs doing this. It would be easy to purchase Netflix and watch it herself â but thereâs a certain thrill in watching it with someone else. He gasps when something happens and her mind races to imagine the music that must accompany a scene. When he snorts, she has to bite her lip to hide a smile. She nearly ruins the whole thing when something bizarre happens to the consultantâs brother and a giggle spills from her lips.
His gaze shoots to hers, but sheâs already holding her phone, pretending to skim a message that makes her laugh. He canât see that itâs blank, she knows, and he turns his gaze back to the screen in time to see an explosion, one loud enough to mask her gasp of surprise.Â
It continues like this for several days, though the actual events take place over several weeks. Her test is nearly upon her and she has to sacrifice some of her library time to actually study, but when she sees him at his usual spot, sans laptop, she figures that she isnât missing anything. Itâs funny, really, when she realizes that he seems to only watch this particular show in the library because it always seems to start exactly where it stops the day before. She pretends its for her, but she knows that itâs just a lucky break.Â
They are nearing the finale for season one and she bounces with excitement three days after her test. Campus is starting to wind down for the term and she just knows that heâll be in the library to watch the final episode. He has to be because sheâll need another excuse if he isnât â her father only let her escape today when she told him she was speaking with a teacher about the year.Â
She enters the library, making a beeline for her spot. Generally, heâs already there, doodling in a notebook while his Netflix loads, but today, his chair is suspiciously empty and she frowns, footsteps slowing to a trudge. Maybe sheâs early? Lucy really doesnât know his class schedule â she doesnât want to either, sheâs not a stalker, sheâs just⊠pretending to have a friend, which is even more pathetic than stalker, in her opinion.
She settles into her chair to wait. Itâs a Wednesday and loathe as she is to admit it, she knows enough about his classes to say that heâs always here on Wednesdays.Â
So where is he?
Ten minutes pass, then thirty, then an hour, and then two hours. Her time is running out and her foot bounces with impatience and worry. She wants to say itâs for missing out on the finale of her show, but itâs really worry over him. Had something happen? She hopes not and wracks her brain for some news on campus, but she rarely pays attention to events unless her father wants her to reach out to the community and he hardly does.
Perhaps he watched it already, she thinks, her worry fading to annoyance. She shouldnât be, because he doesnât know that he canât watch it without her, but surely he knew. On a subconscious level at least! Sheâs well into her own thoughts when he finally stumbles into his chair and sheâs standing up before she knows it, marching over to him.
âDid you watch the finale already?â Lucy asks sharply, hands on her hip. âWhat the hell, Natsu?â
Natsu blinks slowly at her, his laptop sitting on his desk, and itâs only when a sudden grin blooms on his face that her anger drops like a ball, disarmed by the genuine happiness on his face. She swallows, face flushing as her words replay in her mind.Â
âI mean⊠That is⊠if youâreâŠâ Lucy stutters, pressing a hand to her cheek. Heâs laughing now, the type that makes someone want to join in, but all it does is make her cheeks redder. Sheâs possibly resembling a tomato now. âUmm, Iâm just going to go now.âÂ
âNo, wait!â He stops her, taking her wrist gently and she lets out a breath as sparks dance across her skin at the contact. She lets him tug her closer, her fists clenched to hide the trembling in her fingers as he kicks the chair next to him out. Natsu fingers trail down her wrist to her hand almost absently when she sits down, as though he isnât aware that her heart is stuttering at the contact. âI was waiting for ya to say something, canât believe you waited till the last episode to introduce yourself. Kinda rude, if you ask me, youâre basically acting like a leach, but itâs funny when ya try to pretend that ya werenât watching.âÂ
She rubs her cheek with her free hand. âYou knew? Since when?â
âThird episode, it was too much of a coincidence to see you here again, looking at me that way. And also youâre book was upside down, I figured that wasnât normal,â he admits almost sheepishly. She canât figure out why until a pink tinge appears on his face and she realizes that third time was, quite literally, weeks ago.Â
No wonder the font was bigger after that or that he was sitting differently, his shoulder no longer blocking a quarter of the screen. He knew she was watching â and he made it easier.Â
Lucy pulls her hand free to hide her face. Secretly, sheâs a little pleased that he didnât mind, but the larger part⊠âIâm so embarrassed.âÂ
Natsu laughs and she peeks out from between her fingers to study her face. Though his cheeks are still slightly pink, thereâs happiness on his face. âNah, now we have the best meeting at this school. Youâre a stalker, Iâm an enabler, see? Perfect.â
âThatâs not a good thing!âÂ
âEh, letâs not worry about specifics then. Letâs watch this last episode already.â
She peeks at her watch. âDonât you have class?â
âNah, thatâs why I was late. Volunteered to meet my teacher early so he had less people to handle today. Didnât think the meeting would take so long, woulda been better off just going to class. At least we finally got to meet though!â Heâs awfully chipper and his good mood is contagious enough that she smiles back at him. âThis friendship is off balance, by the way. Ya know my name, but I donât know yours.â
Itâs not a subtle, but then she doesnât think heâs a subtle person. His words and action thus far are proof enough of that.
âIâm Lucy. Lucy Heartfilia.â She sticks out her hand, but he slaps a pair of headphones into her fingers instead of taking it. She blinks, puzzled, but then he points to his laptop.Â
âNow you can hear their voices. Better late than never, eh?â His laptop is shut, but he opens it; Netflix is already open, the episode waiting for them. She scoots her chair closer, pushing the headphone in as he hits play.Â
Natsu watches her carefully with a heat that makes her heart flutter, but as the music of the opening theme hits her ears for the first time, Lucy finds herself smiling.Â
