┕ ❤° › FV TASK OO1 - THE INTERVIEW ! ┑
❝ CAN YOU TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF ?? ❞
&&. maritza slouches in the uncomfortable chair, shoulder blades digging into the cheap plastic as the sound of air conditioner becomes a part of the S I L E N C E. placing her hands on top of her thighs to keep them from jiggling nervously, maritza clears her throat as she responds, “ my name’s maritza santos, i’m 18, & i’m currently a freshman as ucsd, but i’m originally from new mexico. i’m looking for a job to help out with paying for textbooks & school stuff. ” her mocha hues lock with the interviewers gaze as she tries to maintain a small, I N N O C E N T smile.
❝WHAT POSITION ARE YOU APPLYING FOR AND HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT IT ?? ❞
&&. “ i suppose you’re not lookin’ to hire an 18 year old with minimal experience as a manager right ? ” maritza jokes with a small chuckle, making it E A S I E R to actually smile. “ in case ya’ didn’t get that, ‘m fu – jokin’. ‘m just lookin’ to be a cashier. ” she pauses for a moment, swallowing down the embarrassmentof almost swearing in front of her potential employer. “ my brother used to tell me the best place to look for a job is the mall ‘cause more often than not S O M E O N E is hirin’. ” she finishes with a slight shrug of her shoulders.
❝ WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE COMPANY ?? ❞
&&. an almost sheepish look crosses her features as she murmurs softly, “ not much if ‘m bein’ honest ? i like your clothes & was lookin’ ‘round for a new pair of jeans when one of your employees helped me out & mentioned ya’ were hirin’. i figured it might make gettin’ a job a lil’ better if i actually like what ‘m tryin’ to sell, so yeah. ” maritza can’t help but think if diego was S T I L L around he would’ve warned her to do her research before this interview.
❝ WHY DO YOU WANT THIS JOB ?? ❞
&&. “ like i mentioned earlier, i need the money for textbooks ‘cause that sh – stuff isn’t cheap. my dad’s nice ‘nough to pay for tuition, but everythin’ else is my own responsibility. so me bein’ H E R E is me takin’ responsibility. ” for once, she adds silently since her life derailed as soon as diego ended up six feet under. besides, she would never tell W H Y she truly needed the money. “ plus, i really do like your stuff – ‘m wearin’ one of your jean jackets. ”
❝ WHY SHOULD WE HIRE YOU ?? ❞
&&. maritza smiles warmly as she responds, “ ‘cause ‘ll work hard. i’ll show up on time & ‘m easy to get along with so ya’ won’t have to worry ‘bout someone with a B A D temparment. i like to talk even if this interview might not be the B E S T example. ” she racks her brain for more, eyes lighting up as she adds, “ ‘m Y O U N G & in school so ‘m relatable. besides, ‘m a friendly face that might help attract more customers. ”
❝ WHAT ARE YOUR GREAT PROFESSIONAL STRENGTHS ?? ❞
&&. her brows as she asks in confusion, “ i feel like ‘ve already kinda answered this, but i ya’ really wanna beat the dead horse – ” she trails off, shrugging momentarily before launching into her spiel. “ ‘m sociable & comfortable making small talk with S T R A N G E R S. i can speak spanish so i dunno how often ya’ guys experience a language barrier, but i dunno i thought speakin’ a second language is a strength. ‘m hardworkin’ ‘cause like i said, the money from this is gonna be very helpful. ”
❝ WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOUR WEAKNESSES ?? ❞
&&. her plush lips purse, features pensive as maritza debates what to say so she doesn’t wreck her chances at getting this job because her O N L Y other option is the amc. the thought of sweeping endless spilled popcorn kernels makes her stomach churn unhappily. “ i guess my bluntness ? i tend to speak my mind & sometimes forget to T H I N K. some people don’t mind honesty, but i know others got a problem with the truth. ” her words are genuine, almost as if she’s speaking to herself more than she is to the other person.
❝ WHAT IS THE GREATEST PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT ?? ❞
&&. “ before this i just worked at my father’s auto shop back in new mexico, so ‘m bettin’ any achievements i had T H E R E don’t really apply to this profession. ” maritza says with a laugh, tone slightly bittersweet as she recalls how she’d often look more forward to work than school. the people her father hired always made the time pass & always helped feed her curiosity to keep it satiated. they N E V E Rneglected to teach her how to fix any type of motorized vehicle. “ i mean, ‘ve been employee of the month before if that helps. ”
❝ WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS ?? ❞
&&. “ hopefully graduated with a degree in art. ” maritza says jokingly. “ ‘m N O T the type of person who likes to plan their life out so far into the future – it’s a dangerous thing to do. ” a year ago, maritza would have answered this question differently, so sure she & diego would be livin’ here together. her hopes had D I E D as quickly as they had grown, & maritza learned to embrace living solely in the moment. “ i guess i’d like to be doin’ somethin’ with my degree, maybe workin’ at a gallery or doin’ my own freelance stuff. ” the brunette says, feeding the other an answer they were looking for.
❝ WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB ?? ❞
&&. “ owning my own S U C C E S S F U L gallery. ” maritza says without missing a beat, keeping up with the persona she is painting for the interviewer. “ i’d like to showcase work i think is cool as well as my own ‘cause what’s the point in just sellin’ art when ya’ can M A K E it took ? ”
❝ WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO OUTSIDE OF WORK ?? ❞
&&. party. drink. dance. drink some more. rinse, repeat. that is the way maritza had spent the summer before starting college with the occasional cry to mourn the loss of her best friend. her smile is innocent, tone soft as she responds with little white lies. “ i like to hang out with my friends, catch up on my fav tv shows, & i spend a lotta my time workin’ on art for school ‘cause ‘m enrolled in a lotta’ art classes so it can be very time consuming. ”
❝ IF YOU WERE AN ANIMAL WHAT WOULD YOU BE ?? ❞
&&. “ is this an optional question by chance ? ” maritza asks, a grave expression on her countenance because she T R U L Y did not want to. she sighs as the other nods, slightly thrown off by how random the question is. “ i guess a bird ‘cause they’re free. ‘m a free ‘nough spirit that it works. ” she murmurs, not sure what the other was trying to get out of her.
❝ DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR US ?? ❞
&&. glancing down at the slim, leather watch on her wrist, maritza breathes a quiet finally so the other wouldn’t hear her. if diego had taught her anything, it was to A L W A Y S ask a question at the end of an interview. “ since i don’t quite know a ton ‘bout the company, is there somethin’ ya’ would like me to know? just so i can be M O R E prepared. ” maritza adds, tone saccharine as she stares at the other expectantly.
